Electricity turns to alcohol

09.04.2012

Scientists from the University of California have found a way to turn electricity into an alternative fuel. This could solve the problem of storing electricity from renewable sources and unsustainable gasoline vehicles.

An electric car is the ideal eco-friendly vehicle. But imperfect batteries severely limit the range and capabilities of electric vehicles. Scientists at the University of California have demonstrated for the first time a method to convert carbon dioxide using electricity into the liquid fuel isobutanol. Thus, it became possible to turn electricity into a familiar chemical fuel.

Today, electricity generated by various methods is still difficult to store efficiently. Chemical accumulators, hydraulic pumps, water splitting have low efficiency and are incompatible with modern transport infrastructure. But if you turn electricity into liquid fuel, you can achieve really high energy storage density. In addition, it is then possible to switch to using electricity as a fuel for transport without having to change the existing infrastructure.

Scientists propose a new method for converting electrical energy into chemical energy, stored as alcohol, which can be used to fill cars. This was achieved with the help of genetically modified Ralstonia eutropha H16 microorganisms, which were "taught" to produce isobutanol and 3-methyl-1-butanol. This uses a bioreactor, carbon dioxide as the only source of carbon, and electricity.

The process is based on photosynthesis. As you know, photosynthesis is the process of converting light energy into chemical energy. There are two stages of photosynthesis - a light reaction and a reaction in the dark. The light reaction converts light energy into chemical energy and takes place in the light. The second step of photosynthesis, the conversion of CO2 into sugar, does not require light. Scientists have been able to separate the two steps of photosynthesis: instead of using biological photosynthesis, convert sunlight into electrical energy (using solar panels) and then capture carbon dioxide to make fuel.

This method is more efficient than similar processes in natural biological systems. Thus, for the production of fuel in this process, large areas under crops are not required, as is the case with traditional biofuels. Since the main reaction takes place in the dark, the bioreactor with bacteria can be placed anywhere, and the solar panels can be placed on the roof of a building or in the desert.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

The value of the graviton mass was specified 15.11.2019

A group of scientists, which included researchers from several French universities and other scientific institutions, has found a new way to refine the value of the upper limit of the mass of the graviton. This method is based on accurate measurements of several parameters of large cosmic bodies, such as stars and giant gas planets, thanks to this, scientists will be able to do what is almost impossible to do with any other methods available to scientists.

According to Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, in the process of mass formation for huge cosmic bodies, which deform the space-time continuum in the adjacent space with their gravity, a theoretically weightless elementary particle called graviton is involved. Scientists for many years, with varying success, "broke spears", proving or refuting the fact that the graviton has its own mass.

One of the methods used by scientists in the past was based on data from studying the expansion rate of the Universe, according to the results of this method, it turned out that if the graviton has a mass, then it is very small, at the level of 10^-32 electron volts. Unfortunately, the above results are based on a large number of assumptions and assumptions, some of which are still considered controversial.

The second method for determining the mass of a graviton is to study small deviations in the orbits along which rather massive cosmic bodies move. It is these deviations that can be caused by the presence of a non-zero mass of the graviton, however, if the graviton has, like the photon of light, a zero rest mass, then the gravitons must move at a speed close to the speed of light in order to have a noticeable effect on the world.

It was this second method that the French scientists adopted, finding a way to improve its accuracy. Scientists use data that includes the "frozen" position of some stars and planets at certain points in time. The first time points of such a "freeze" begin in 2000. Based on these initial data, scientists calculated the mass, velocity and position in space of the Sun, some planets and large asteroids.

Then, based on several fundamental equations, computer mathematical models were created that calculated the movement of all analyzed objects forward in time, up to 2017, and back up to 1913. These periods of time were not chosen by chance, scientists managed to find in the total mass of astronomical data sufficiently detailed and reliable data on the cosmic bodies of interest to them at that time.

Having carried out calculations based on the deviations of the real orbits of cosmic bodies from theoretical ones, scientists have calculated a new value for the upper limit of the graviton mass, which is now equal to 6.76x10^-23 with a probability of about 90 percent.

The researchers note that the value they obtained is very close to the value obtained by scientists working at the LIGO gravitational observatory and studying gravitational waves. This instills hope in the reliability of the results obtained, but does not yet exclude the possibility that such a coincidence is just an accident.
