Our planet is hit by asteroids from time to time. What has been the trend of such catastrophes over millions of years, are they becoming more or less frequent?

After analyzing the data on the age of craters that arose during the fall of asteroids over the past 250 million years, employees of the Astronomical Institute of the Max Planck Society (Germany) came to the conclusion that during this time the frequency of asteroid collisions with the Earth has constantly increased. True, erosion can be the reason for such statistics.

Many of the most ancient craters have been smoothed out over millions of years, while the more recent ones are still clearly visible, because there are more of them. On the other hand, according to some data, even on the Moon, where there is no erosion, there are more young craters than old ones. The question remains open.
