Cystic fibrosis is a hereditary disease associated with a defect in one of the chromosomes. The consequence is a violation of the movement of mucus in various organs, for example, in the lungs. It causes illness and death at the age of 30-40.

You can fight the disease by constantly taking hormonal drugs that normalize the movement of mucus, but doctors have more ambitious plans: to try to eliminate the cause, that is, introduce the correct genes into the patient's cells. This can be prevented by the immune system: viruses are usually used for introduction, and it prevents their penetration.

A large group of researchers from King's College London and other organizations decided to use complexes of a liposome and a plasmid, a circular DNA molecule containing the correct gene, for delivery. For twenty years of work, they have reached clinical trials involving people. More than two hundred volunteers aged 12 years and older took part in the next series, who were inhaled the drug once a month for a year and observed their lung function. The result came out like this: the situation with breathing did not improve, but did not worsen either, which cannot be said about the control group that received a placebo.

According to the authors, the result confirms the correctness of the chosen method and allows us to continue work in this direction.
