Cloning of ancient animals is discussed by Russian scientists 12.03.2012

In August last year, in the Ust-Yansky region of Yakutia, paleontologists discovered the remains of ancient animals - a mammoth, a bison and a horse. As part of the seminar on the study of paleontological objects, which ended on Friday, March 2, the researchers announced their intention to send the obtained samples of animal tissues and bones to all the leading institutions in the world for possible cloning. This was reported by the Interfax news agency with reference to Yevgeny Mashchenko, a senior researcher at the Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The scientist notes that researchers face a number of unsolved problems. First of all, it is necessary to select a female of a related species capable of bearing a clone of an ancient animal, and it is also necessary to conduct a series of studies on the viability of tissue samples of the animals found. Without these primary tasks, further research in this direction is practically futile.

The age of the discovered remains of a mammoth is 9-10 thousand years, and of a bison and a horse - at least 3-4 thousand years. At the same time, Mashchenko noted that the estimates may be inaccurate. There is a possibility that the animals died much earlier - 10-20 thousand years ago.

At the end of February, Russian scientists announced the successful completion of an experiment on growing a plant from seeds that were 32 years old.
