A hungry microbe will not touch

In order to destroy the enemy that has penetrated the body, there is an immune system. And what about the external enemy, living on the so-called border tissue - the surface of the intestines, lungs or on the skin? If you keep the immune system in constant tension, you get chronic inflammation.

And if you do not keep, then how to deal with pathogens? Scientists from the University of Bonn, led by Professor Michael Hoch, have discovered a mechanism that is completely independent of the immune system, and hunger is needed to activate it. It turns out that the cells of both the human body and Drosophila flies are capable of producing so-called antimicrobial peptides - they destroy cell membranes and kill microorganisms (the authors of the message do not specify whether they are any or only harmful).

The signal for the production of such peptides is given by the FOXO transcription factor. This factor is busy turning on or off some genes. It, in turn, activates the low content of insulin, which falls just during hunger or excessive energy expenditure.

"The body, feeling a lack of energy, begins to strengthen its border with the outside world in order to avoid a dangerous situation," says Prof. Hoch.

A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. Hair grown from stem cells 03.05.2012

Japanese researchers have grown human hair on the skin of hairless mice by implanting hair follicles derived from stem cells. At the first stage of the work, scientists at the University of Tokyo, working under the guidance of Professor Takashi Tsuyi, grew hair follicles from stem cells of the skin of mouse embryos, as well as from cells of sensory hair bulbs (vibrissae) of adult animals.

Laboratory-obtained follicles were implanted into the skin of completely bald, immunodeficient mice. One month after the procedure, about 75% of the implanted follicles grew real hair. Moreover, the implanted follicles formed full-fledged contacts with the surrounding animal tissues, including the epidermis; muscles that raise hair; and nerve fibres.

Repeating the experiment with follicles grown from cells isolated from the skin of a patient suffering from premature androgenic alopecia also led to the appearance of full-fledged dyed human hair on the skin of animals.

The researchers plan to start conducting clinical trials within the next 3-5 years and hope that it will take no more than 10 years to turn their approach into an effective treatment for baldness.
