Roadside Magnetic Leaves

27.11.2009

According to the leaves of trees, one can judge the level of air pollution, according to American geophysicists.

Everything that is contained in the exhaust gases, and not only in them, settles on the leaves of trees, including microscopic particles of iron oxide with magnetic properties. After that, the leaves also become magnetic, and the level of their magnetism can be used to judge how polluted the air is by the products of fuel combustion.

This was found out by researchers from the University of Western Washington, led by Bernie Hausen, by analyzing the leaves from trees that grow in the city next to the bus stop, on the next street and outside the city.

As expected, the most magnetic, that is, dirty, were the leaves in the area of the stop. On the neighboring street, the pollution level turned out to be 2-8 times lower, and outside the city - 4-10 times lower. It turns out that if, when traveling around the city, you choose not a busy street, but a quiet lane, then not only cleaner air, but much cleaner air will get into your lungs.

By the way, these data are confirmed by the research of scientists from the University of Leeds (Great Britain), headed by Professor Alison Tomlin. They found that on the street next to the city highway, the content of carbon monoxide in the air is less than some percentage, but as much as four times.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

MAX30205 - medical digital temperature sensor 21.07.2017

The new MAX3025 digital sensor from Maxim Integrated measures human body temperature with an accuracy of 0,1°C over a temperature range of 37...39°C. The sensor will find application in medical devices, devices for sports and fitness.

A feature of the sensor is a 16-bit sigma-delta ADC, which allows you to register a temperature change of four thousandths of a degree.

The chip has an I2C interface with bus blocking protection. With address selection, up to 2 sensors can operate on a single I32C bus. In addition to direct temperature measurement, the MAX3025 contains a temperature comparator that signals on a separate line the fact that the temperature exceeds the set values.

The output of the built-in comparator is implemented as an open drain; it can also operate in the interrupt signal generation mode. In this case, the output value is fixed before the read operation of any register is performed on the I2C bus. The MAX30205 operates from 2,7V to 3,6V with a peak current draw of less than 600µA.

You can use the MAX30205EVSYS# demo kit to get familiar with the capabilities of the new sensor. It allows you to display the temperature value on the PC. The MAX30205 evaluation GUI software is used to display all sensor parameters.
