Ground-level ozone reduces tree growth

27.01.2009

At the beginning of the industrial revolution, not only did the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increase: the concentration of ground-level ozone increased fourfold.

It is believed that this gas is formed during the photochemical reaction of nitrogen oxides with the products of incomplete combustion of organic fuel. It is natural to expect that, firstly, it somehow affects living beings, and secondly, that its concentration will continue to grow.

University of Illinois Center for Atmospheric Research researcher Victoria Wittig analyzed data from more than 250 publications in peer-reviewed journals and came up with the following estimate: the rate of tree biomass formation is now 7% less than in 1800. And if the ozone growth rate continues, then by 2100 biomass will grow another 10% slower. Moreover, broad-leaved trees suffer more than conifers.

All of this means that ozone, and a greenhouse gas in itself, contributes further to global warming by preventing trees from utilizing CO2.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Erasing memories 29.07.2020

Fantastic plots of films and novels tend to become reality. For example, "memory erasure" is often mentioned in them. Success in this direction was achieved by researchers from Italy. They mastered the technique of removing unpleasant memories from a person’s memory. It is assumed that it can become the foundation for creating approaches for the effective treatment of mental disorders and post-traumatic syndrome.

Memory erasure is based on the effect on the brain using transcranial magnetic stimulation. By acting on the brain with a magnetic field and directing it to certain zones, it is possible to change their electrical activity. By doing this in an orderly manner, scientists have learned to achieve the results they need. For example, TMS can be used to treat Alzheimer's disease, improve math skills, and reduce cravings for smoking and other bad habits.

Scientists have figured out in detail how memories arise in the brain. They highlighted the presence of such a phenomenon as memory reconsolidation. This term refers to the periodic recall of memories from long-term memory, reinforcing them. It is characterized by the so-called "window of variability", when the memory can be influenced and corrected. Knowing this and applying a magnetic field to areas of the prefrontal cortex of the brain, one can remove unpleasant memories associated with stress.

To confirm this theory, a demonstrative experiment was conducted with the participation of 100 volunteers who volunteered to serve science. They were asked to view a selection of photographs with a neutral theme. While watching, they were electrocuted, inflicting unpleasant electric shocks. This caused an association between the photo and the pain. The next day, they were asked to recall their experiences and had a TMS session. Then, their memories were checked again. It turned out that they were freed from the fear of electric shock, although they did not forget what happened to them a few days ago.
