The sharp tip of a tunneling microscope's needle can pick up and move atoms - but only one atom at a time. In principle, this process makes it possible to assemble nanotechnical devices built from individual atoms, but the work is progressing very slowly.

Scientists from the French Center for the Development of New Materials, in collaboration with colleagues from the Free University in Berlin, have created a tip molecule for the tip of a tunneling microscope.

The molecule, which is based on a benzene ring of six carbon atoms, captures up to four atoms at once and allows them to move with an accuracy of 0,1 nanometers.
