ZL33020 Chip for Ethernet use

The ZL33020 chip from ZARLINK SEMICONDUCTOR is designed for use in an Ethernet network. It is a 24-port switch with 480KB of built-in memory for storing databases and a data frame buffer.

Operation speed switchable: 10, 100 and 1000 megasamples per second.

Sharks navigate by the Earth's magnetic field 11.05.2021

A new study shows that some sharks can read the Earth's field like a map and use it to navigate the high seas.

In 2005, scientists reported that a great white shark swam from South Africa to Australia and back in almost a straight line, a feat that led some scientists to speculate that the shark relied on magnetic sense.

Brian Keller, an environmentalist at Florida State University, and his colleagues decided to do an experiment. The researchers wrapped a bedroom-sized cage with copper wire and placed a small pool in the center of the cage. By passing an electric current through a wire, they were able to create a tunable magnetic field at the center of the pool. The scientists then selected 20 juveniles of the hammerhead shark, a species that migrates hundreds of miles, from the shallow waters off the coast of Florida. They placed the sharks one at a time in the pool and allowed them to swim freely under the influence of three different magnetic fields. One field simulated the natural field of the Earth at the location where the sharks were collected, while the others simulated fields at locations 600 km north and 600 km south of their habitats.

When the field was the same as the one where the sharks gathered, the researchers found that the animals swam in random directions. But under the influence of the southern magnetic field, the sharks persistently changed course in order to swim north, into the wall of the pool, to their habitat.

The scientists found that the sharks did not choose any direction when they swam under the influence of the northern field. This may be because hammerhead sharks do not typically migrate north of their home and therefore rarely have to return south again.

The result of the research adds sharks to the list of animals, including birds, sea turtles and lobsters, which navigate through space using a mysterious magnetic sense.
