Rabbits threaten heritage

Almost two thousand years ago, in 122 AD, the Roman emperor Hadrian visited Britain, which had been captured by the Romans. The authorities of the colony complained to him about the constant attacks of barbarian tribes from the still unconquered north. And then Adrian ordered to build a protective wall across the entire island.

This structure, partly an earthen rampart, partly a stone wall with a deep moat, was built in five years, with almost all the work carried out by the soldiers of the three Roman legions permanently stationed in Britain.

The surviving sections of Hadrian's Wall are considered a valuable monument of history and architecture. Now the remains of the defensive structure are threatened by rabbits, digging the wall with their holes. In places, the base of the wall is so pitted that it looks like a lunar landscape. Sooner or later the foundation of the wall will give way and it will collapse.

Archaeologists are pushing for the introduction of biological control measures against rabbits. In the 50s of the last century, the number of rabbits reached one hundred million heads, and the myxomatosis virus, a deadly disease for rabbits, had to be spread among them, which destroyed 99% of the livestock. However, now it is estimated that there are again too many of them - about 38 million.

The American Air Company introduced a vodka called Air Vodka made from captured carbon dioxide. Another component of the drink is water. This is just one of several new products that use CO2 emissions that can be captured in various industries.

“We have partners that we work with. They capture carbon dioxide before it goes into the atmosphere. We then use that carbon dioxide in the process of creating alcohol. With every bottle we make, carbon dioxide that would have been released is removed into the atmosphere and I think it's very good for our planet," says Gregory Constantine, co-founder of the Air Company.

The production of alcoholic beverages in the traditional way leads to the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. American scientists have found that the production of one bottle of alcohol with a volume of 0,75 liters leads to the release of approximately 3 kg of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Creating vodka in the traditional way not only results in emissions, but also requires a lot of water - about 35 liters per liter of distillate. At the same time, Air Vodka contains only two components: carbon dioxide and water. According to Konstantin, much less water is needed to produce this vodka.

An alcoholic drink is produced by separating hydrogen and oxygen from water using electrolysis. The hydrogen, together with separately captured CO2, is then fed into a dedicated carbon recycling system. In this case, ethanol is formed, which, in combination with water, forms a kind of vodka.

But despite the environmental benefits of such "green" alcohol production, special vodka is not cheap - $ 65 per bottle, and therefore this drink can be attributed to luxury brands of alcohol.
