Since the early 1980s, there has been a significant increase in the number of twins born worldwide. This phenomenon has attracted the interest of scientists who are seeking to understand the causes and consequences of this increase.

The number of newborn twins has increased by a third since 1980, according to a study conducted by scientists from the University of Oxford. Now every 42nd child is born as a twin.

One of the main reasons for this phenomenon is the increasing use of reproductive medicine methods, especially in vitro fertilization (IVF). Scientists also note that women are increasingly deciding to have children at an older age, which also increases the likelihood of multiple pregnancies.

Professor Christian Mond emphasizes the importance of the study, noting that twin births are associated with an increased risk for both mother and infants.

Although increases in twin births have been reported in many countries in Europe, North America, and Asia, most of the increase has occurred in dizygotic twins, while the rate of monozygotic twins has remained stable.

The increase in the birth rate of twins is a complex phenomenon that requires attention from science and medicine. Understanding the causes and consequences of this phenomenon will help develop strategies to improve the health of mothers and babies born in multiple pregnancies and make twin births safer and more successful.
