Ideal temperature in pensioners' bedrooms

30.03.2024

Quality sleep plays an important role in maintaining health and well-being, especially for older adults. In recent years, research has been conducted to determine optimal sleep conditions for this age group. One of the key aspects of this research is to determine the ideal indoor temperature for older adults during sleep.

A team of scientists from the Marcus Institute for Research on Aging and Harvard Medical School conducted a sleep study of older adults to find out the optimal temperature in the bedroom for quality rest.

Previously, it was believed that the ideal temperature for sleep was between 16 °C and 18 °C. However, new research has shown that it is recommended that people over 65 sleep in a warmer room than previously thought.

Over 11 nights, experts monitored the sleep of 50 older people and concluded that the optimal temperature for a good night's rest ranged from 20°C to 25°C. These data allow us to more accurately determine the sleep conditions that promote the best rest for older adults.

It's important to note that too high a temperature in the bedroom can also negatively impact your quality of sleep. According to scientists, a clinically significant decrease in sleep efficiency of 10% occurs when the bedroom temperature rises to 25°C-30°C.

Studying the temperature patterns in the bedrooms of older people helps to better understand what conditions promote the best rest and sleep in this age group. Optimal sleep temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C may be key to improving the quality of life and health of older adults.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Vegetable cellulose for bone implants 01.04.2019

Researchers at the University of British Columbia and McMaster University (Canada) have developed an airy, foamy substance that can be injected into the body and provide the scaffolding for new bone to grow.

The new material is made by processing nanocrystals obtained from plant cellulose. The crystals combine to form a strong yet lightweight sponge - an airgel - that can contract or expand as needed to completely fill the bone cavity.

New cellulose nanocrystalline airgel is a more efficient alternative to current synthetic materials. To verify this, the research team conducted an experiment with laboratory rats. The rodents were divided into two groups, only one of which was implanted with airgel implants. After three weeks, rats with implants grew bones 33% faster than those in the second group, and 12% faster after 50 weeks.

Such "scaffolding" of nanocellulose can be used as dental implants in the future. In addition, they will be useful during operations to replace the vertebral discs. Once the damaged bone is strong enough, the implant will have to break down into non-toxic components that will not harm the body.
