Ocean protection benefits fisheries and tourism

Ocean conservation is an increasingly pressing and important issue that requires global attention. However, in addition to the obvious environmental benefits, protecting marine resources can also have significant economic benefits. Research from around the world sheds light on the relationship between ocean conservation, fisheries and tourism, demonstrating that good management of marine resources generates high incomes and boosts economic development.

Research conducted in more than 30 countries has confirmed that ocean conservation brings significant economic benefits, especially for fisheries and tourism. Dr Mark John Costello, a professor at Norway's Nord University and author of the study, noted that protecting marine areas stimulates economic growth, helping to create new jobs and increase GDP.

The study found that fully protected marine reserves help fish stocks recover, increasing fish populations by up to 500%. This leads to an increase in catch and an increase in the size of fish, which in turn contributes to the influx of tourists. Restrictions on fishing and other activities in protected areas lead to significant increases in catches and help preserve marine ecosystems.

The project, based on an analysis of 200 studies, found that protecting marine resources brings significant economic benefits to both fisheries and tourism. The economic benefits of ocean conservation have been demonstrated in numerous countries, including Australia, Thailand and Egypt.

Dr Costello emphasized that fully protected areas are particularly efficient and manageable, making them more economically viable. This research provides a compelling case not only for the conservation of marine ecosystems, but also for the economic justification of measures to protect them.

Protecting the ocean is key to both preserving its richness and diversity and stimulating economic development. Developing and implementing effective marine resource management strategies is critical to achieving sustainable development and maximizing benefits to society and nature.
