Using Apple Vision Pro during surgery

The medical team at Cromwell Hospital in London used Apple Vision Pro for the first time during two spinal surgeries. This event confirms the headset's potential as a medical tool that will change the way surgical practice is practiced.

Although the doctors themselves did not use Vision Pro, the operating room nurse worked with virtual reality using glasses while preparing and performing procedures. The headset made it possible to view virtual screens in the operating room, select instruments and monitor the progress of the operation.

Software developed by eXeX, a company that specializes in creating artificial intelligence-based applications for surgery, has significantly improved the patient care process. Using Apple Vision Pro opens up new opportunities for developing healthcare applications such as clinical education, surgical planning, training and medical imaging.

Cryoprocessor Horse Ridge 12.12.2019

Intel Labs shared details about its new Horse Ridge cryogenic processor, developed jointly with the Dutch company QuTech. This is the world's first chip designed to create commercial quantum systems. Horse Ridge is designed to take on all the work that previously fell on a significant number of semiconductor technologies.

Relatively small (about the size of the palm of a hand) and replacing the huge external components normally required to drive qubits, the new chip should allow Intel to increase the number of qubits on its way to building a practical quantum computer that solves real-world problems.

Google has previously said it has achieved quantum superiority over traditional supercomputers. Its 53-qubit quantum computer was the first to solve a problem faster than the world's most powerful supercomputer. However, according to Intel, for large-scale commercially viable quantum systems that solve real problems, at least thousands of qubits are needed. This so-called quantum practicality is what Intel primarily focuses on.

To date, quantum systems use many devices and components connected by cables in racks, which is a bottleneck and requires no less large-scale cryogenic cooling. This hinders system scalability for more qubits and creates the need for an integrated solution. Intel claims that it can solve this problem thanks to the Horse Ridge chip.

The company describes Horse Ridge as an integrated single-chip system that is built on Intel's proprietary 22FFL FinFET process technology. The chip is located inside the refrigeration unit and is therefore designed to operate at cryogenic temperatures (-269 degrees Celsius). As a result, the complexity of quantum engineering technology can be reduced by moving from hundreds of cables to a single unified complex.

Horse Ridge allows you to control multiple qubits at once and provides system scalability. While Intel still uses a 49-qubit quantum computer, its new cryoprocessor could give it an edge in what the company calls quantum usability.
