Global warming is causing coral bleaching

Changing ocean temperatures caused by global warming are becoming a key cause of coral bleaching around the world, warns the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This process, in which corals lose their colorful algae and turn white, has been seen from the Great Barrier Reef in Australia to the waters of Florida.

Scientists warn that corals need extended periods of cool water to successfully recover from bleaching. In light of this problem, research is being conducted and measures are being taken to maintain the health of reefs, such as limiting anchorage and controlling invasive species. All this underscores the urgency of taking action to curb climate change and preserve the unique ecosystems of the oceans.

Derek Manzello, director of Coral Reef Watch, emphasizes that coral bleaching has already been recorded in 35 countries and territories around five oceans and seas. Experts fear that if water temperatures do not drop, similar processes could affect all of the world's coral reefs by 2040. Recovery of corals after bleaching requires long periods of cool water, and without this, their chances of recovery are reduced.

Recent record temperatures have impacted the coral reef, although not to the same extent as in some other regions. However, even the Gulf of Mexico is not immune to climate change, with researchers raising concerns about overheating and threats to corals.

Although Flower Garden Banks appears less susceptible to bleaching for now, scientists are actively looking for ways to keep the reefs healthy. One of the measures is a ban on anchoring directly on reefs, replaced by the use of special floating cables for attaching to boats. Other efforts are aimed at controlling invasive fish species and organisms in the reef zone.

Scientists from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute (USA) have long been interested in the unusual properties of the web in order to adapt this natural glue for human needs. In the course of numerous observations, it has been established that ultraviolet rays are an important environmental factor for creating a web.

For example, the web of spiders that hunt in sunlight was found to be much more resistant to ultraviolet light than the web of nocturnal inhabitants, suggesting certain adaptive abilities.

Scientists added ultraviolet radiation to the list of factors such as humidity, temperature and strain rate. By carefully studying the properties of the web, the researchers hope to create an environmentally friendly adhesive inspired by the spider's glycoprotein filament.

The ability of the web to resist ultraviolet light will help scientists create a technology to protect polymers from the degradation that plastic undergoes due to exposure to UV radiation.
