A new way to feel touch

Scientists from Imperial College London present new insights into the mechanisms of light touch sensation found inside hair follicles.

The discovery of the mechanism of light touch sensation in hair follicles opens new perspectives in understanding skin sensitivity and the role of follicles in the process of tactile sensation perception. Further research and testing of the results in living organisms can expand our knowledge of the neurobiology and influence of hair follicles on the sensation of touch.

Not only the nerve endings located in the skin are able to respond to touch. The study shows that cells inside hair follicles, organs located in the skin and hair, are also actively involved in this process.

Scientists conducted RNA sequencing of individual human skin cells and hair follicles, finding that the follicles had a higher percentage of sensory receptors than the skin. By creating artificial structures from hair follicle cells and sensory nerves, the researchers activated low-threshold mechanoreceptors when stimulating follicle cells, responsible for recognizing light touch.

Additional analysis revealed that hair follicle cells release the neurotransmitters serotonin and histamine in response to touch. Blocking the receptors for these neurotransmitters on sensory neurons resulted in a loss of response to follicle stimulation. Experiments with skin cells also showed a response to light touch, but the mechanism of histamine use is exclusively in hair follicle cells.

The study was conducted on cell cultures in vitro and requires replication in living organisms to confirm the results. Further research will help to better understand the mechanisms of follicular sensitivity to touch and their role in this process.
