The chicken's speech is deciphered

26.09.2023

Scientists from the University of Tokyo have achieved a breakthrough in understanding the emotional states of chickens, thanks to the use of artificial intelligence. This scientific breakthrough, which can accurately detect birds' emotions with 80% accuracy, provides farmers with valuable information about the health of their pets.

Experts say that using sound analysis technology, they can decipher six different emotional states in chickens, including hunger, fear, anger, satisfaction, excitement and stress. The results of this study were published in the journal Research Square and provide details of the team's scientific findings.

"This is a huge achievement for science," says Professor Adrian Cheok. "And this is just the beginning. We hope to adapt these artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to other animal species, creating the basis for a deeper understanding and interaction with the animal kingdom. Knowing the emotions of animals will help us create more caring environments for them."

Professor Cheok and his team collaborated with a group of eight animal psychologists and veterinary surgeons who shared their experience and knowledge of emotional expression in chickens. Together they analyzed sound recordings from 80 birds, covering more than 200 hours of audio material. Scientists trained artificial intelligence by providing it with 100 hours of recordings of emotion classifications for training. Then, using the remaining 100 hours of audio recordings, the artificial intelligence achieved 80% accuracy in determining the chickens' emotional states based on previous experience.

The next step for Professor Cheok and his team will be to develop a free app that will allow farmers to use this innovative technology to analyze the emotions and health of their poultry flocks.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Portable Printer for Instant PCB Fabrication 15.11.2015

Modern life is inconceivable without printed circuit boards, since they form the basis of any electronic product - they can be found both in smartphones and in biomedical devices. For many engineers, inventors and students, a fast and low-cost PCB process is essential for creating new electronic devices. But usually in practice things are different. Often, printed circuit board drawings have to be sent for sale to specialized companies that are located abroad. And if you need to make even the slightest change to the board, this long and costly process must be started all over again.

3D printing, at one time, radically changed the idea of the speed of production of various devices and their components, and now the long process of creating printed circuit boards is out of the picture of modern progress. Moreover, the inevitably high costs of prototyping new electronic devices can only exacerbate the already existing shortage of engineers in Russia. Such financial investments in the production of printed circuit boards can negatively affect the productivity of enterprises that belong to small and medium-sized businesses, and especially start-ups. At the same time, the long process of creating boards inevitably leads to a delay in the release of new technologies to the market.

Four recent graduates from the University of Waterloo in Canada have set themselves the task of finding a solution to this problem. Having gone a long way towards their goal, novice engineers introduced the VolteraV-One invention to the world. The device is a laptop-sized PCB printer that can turn blueprints into final products in minutes. No more delays and additional costs for sending orders abroad. This invention allowed a team of young engineers to receive the honorary title of international winner of the James Dyson Award 2015.

The Voltera V-One uses the same principles of rapid prototyping that are at the heart of 3D printing. The device uses conductive and insulating inks for printing, which form a two-layer printed circuit board. In addition, the device uses a solder paste dispenser to apply additional components to the board, which are soldered to it using a 550W heating module.

Alroy Almeida, co-founder of Voltera, talks about the company's development: "When we first opened our company, we consulted with many experts who considered us too ambitious and argued that it was simply impossible to develop a tool for quickly and cheaply creating printed circuit boards. We We decided to take on this challenge and prove that we can do it!" Parts for the device are now being made in China, with developers conducting additional testing at the office and on the assembly line in Canada.

Additive technologies, which involve the formation of a part by successively "building up" the material layer by layer, have opened up new possibilities in creating devices, even for those who did not have them before. The Voltera V-One has the potential to lead the same revolution in electronics. By becoming the international winner of the James Dyson Award, the team will receive a $30 award to further improve the invention.
