Creating Super Potatoes

As climate change raises concerns about global food security, researchers at McGill University are exploring ways to improve the sustainability and nutritional profile of potatoes by analyzing the genome sequences of nearly 300 potato varieties.

Professor Martina Strömvik and her team created a potato superpangen to identify genetic traits that could lead to the development of new potato varieties with improved characteristics.

"Our superpangen reveals the genetic diversity of potatoes and allows us to identify genetic traits that can improve modern varieties. It includes data on 60 species and represents the most extensive collection of genomic data on potatoes and their relatives."

Researchers say wild potato species can serve as teachers, helping to understand which genetic traits play an important role in adapting to climate change and extreme weather, as well as improving food quality and food security.

To create the potato pangene, the researchers used supercomputers to analyze data from publicly available genetic data banks, including repositories in Canada, the United States and Peru.

Scientists hope pangen will help answer many questions about the origins and evolution of this important crop, which was domesticated by indigenous people in the mountains of southern Peru nearly 10 years ago. In addition, these data can be used to identify specific genes that contribute to the development of more resistant potato varieties, using both traditional breeding methods and gene editing techniques.

"Researchers hope to develop plants that are resistant to various diseases and can better survive extreme weather conditions such as heavy rains, frosts and droughts," said Prof Strömvik.
