The rapid construction of skyscrapers in China and the Arab countries has caused a great demand for elevators. The Japanese firm Hitachi, one of the world's leading manufacturers of lifting machines, has built the world's tallest elevator test tower.

Its height above the ground is 213 meters, and the underground floors go deeper by another 15 meters. The tower has nine elevator shafts.
