Larks are descendants of Neanderthals

24.02.2023

A new study suggests that we owe our ability to wake up at the first rays of the sun to Neanderthals.

It is known that our circadian rhythms or biological clock works as a built-in regulator of sleep and wake cycles. This built-in timing system is influenced by many different environmental factors, but circadian genes also play a role - all together they affect whether we are early birds or night owls.

In the new study, scientists have focused on studying how our genes influence how our body clock works and to whom we owe it. The scientists used sequence-based machine learning techniques to identify archaic variants in the human genome that affect circadian rhythms.

The results of the study suggest that every time we manage to wake up early and get to work, meeting or school on time, we should be thanking our old cousins - Neanderthals for this. Researchers have found that it is their genes that we owe our ability to wake up early.

It is known that modern people who first arrived in Eurasia had to adapt to a number of environmental problems that they faced - in particular, we are talking about large seasonal fluctuations in daylight hours than they are used to in their homeland. Fortunately, for all of us, Eurasia was already inhabited by other groups of people well adapted to life in higher latitudes.

Ancient Homo sapiens interbred with Eurasian Neanderthals and "inherited" a lot of harmful genes, but in addition to them there were several positive genetic traits - for example, those that influenced circadian rhythms and helped to adapt to new conditions.

It was the interbreeding between modern humans and Neanderthals that ultimately created the potential for adaptive introgression as humans increasingly moved into the new environment.

The researchers analyzed the nature of these archaic genes and concluded that they all seem to shift the circadian rhythm in the same direction, making Eurasians more likely to be early risers.

Similar circadian adaptations are also observed in other species living in the northern territories. For example, in fruit flies, these early bird genes help the biological clock synchronize with the summer.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Energy efficient Intel Atom x3 processors 15.05.2015

Intel has expanded its range of Atom x3 processors with two new models, designated x3-C3405 and x3-C3445.

Atom x3 chips were presented during the MWC 2015 exhibition. They were created under the SoFIA (Smartphone or Featurephone on Intel Architecture) program, which is designed to reduce product costs, expand its functionality and speed up market launch through cooperation with other companies.

So far, the Atom x3 family has included three models: x3-C3130 with two cores, as well as quad-core x3-C3230RK and x3-C3440.

The new processors, like the previously presented models, are manufactured using 28-nanometer technology. They are endowed with four processing cores with a frequency of 1,2 GHz (increases to 1,4 GHz). Supports 64-bit instructions and LPDDR2 / 3-1066 RAM up to 2 GB. The integrated graphics core operates at a frequency of 456 MHz.

The Atom x3-C3405 system-on-a-chip provides Wi-Fi-only support, while the Atom x3-C3445 also supports 300G LTE FDD/TDD mobile communications with data rates up to XNUMXMbps. The processors are designed for smartphones, phablets and tablet computers.
