Light travels forward and backward in time at the same time

11.02.2023

By separating a photon using a special optical crystal, two independent teams of physicists have achieved what they call a quantum time flip, in which the photon exists in both a forward and backward time state.

The effect arises from the convergence of two strange principles of quantum mechanics that contradict certain rules. The first principle, quantum superposition, allows tiny particles to exist in different states or different versions of themselves at the same time, as long as they are not observed. The second principle, the symmetry of charge, parity, and time reversal (CPT), states that any system containing particles will obey the same physical laws, even if the particle charges, spatial coordinates, and motions in time are reversed, as in a mirror.

By combining these two principles, physicists created a photon that seemed to simultaneously move along and across the arrow of time.

"The concept of the arrow of time gives a word to the apparent unidirectionality of time that we observe in the macroscopic world in which we live. In fact, this contradicts many fundamental laws of physics, which are generally symmetrical in time and therefore do not have the best direction of time" - noted Theodor Stremberg, a physicist from the University of Vienna.

Scientists created their time-reversed photon out of intellectual curiosity, but further experiments showed that time could be coupled with inverse logic gates to enable simultaneous computation in either direction, thus paving the way for quantum processors with vastly increased processing power.

The scientists say a future theory of quantum gravity that combines general relativity and quantum mechanics should include particles with mixed time orientations, as in this experiment, and could allow researchers to look into some of the most mysterious phenomena in the universe.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Electronic helmet for truck drivers 14.04.2024

Road safety, especially for drivers of heavy construction equipment, is a top priority for engineers and scientists. In light of this, the German Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Strength and System Reliability has introduced a new product - an electronic helmet, which is designed to protect drivers from serious injury when driving construction vehicles. A new electronic helmet developed by a team of engineers from the Fraunhofer Institute opens up new perspectives for the safety of truck and construction equipment drivers. The device is capable of monitoring the level of shaking in the car cabin and warning the driver of possible danger. The basis of the helmet's operation is a built-in piezoelectric sensor, which generates electricity during physical deformation. This mechanism allows the device to respond to intense vibrations typical of construction equipment. When the level of deformation exceeds safe values, an alarm system is activated on the helmet, ... >>

Antivitamins instead of antibiotics 13.04.2024

The problem of bacterial resistance to antibiotics is becoming increasingly serious, posing a threat to the effective treatment of infections. In light of this, researchers are looking for new ways to combat superbugs. One of the promising directions is the use of antivitamins that can have an antibacterial effect. Antivitamins, although known as the opposite of vitamins, have proven to be a promising tool in the fight against bacterial antibiotic resistance. A study conducted by scientists from the University of Göttingen in Germany confirmed their potential in creating new drugs to combat dangerous infections. With the rise of antibiotic-resistant superbugs, there is a need to find alternative treatments. Antivitamins are molecules similar to vitamins, but capable of inhibiting bacterial activity without harm to the human body. At the moment, science knows only three antivitamins: rose ... >>

Icis smart glasses from Laforge Optical 20.02.2014

"Glasses are first and foremost a fashion accessory," Laforge Optical decided. And if the developers from Laforge are seriously determined to create a technological device that stands out from the competition, waving to push the Google Glass gadget off the pedestal, then they should do this by hitting the most vulnerable part of the creation from Google - its design.

Icis smart glasses, available now for pre-order, will not only embody the technological advancement of their owner, but also show that the owner of the device also has good taste and understands modern fashion. As for the technical characteristics, Icis will have the classic functionality for this class of devices: a camera (it will be absent in the beta versions of the gadget), a microphone, a speaker and a touchpad, and the glasses will act as displays, while covering the maximum field of view available for glasses. A friendly interface will automatically convert notifications from smartphones and other mobile gadgets running iOS, Android or Windows operating systems into an informative visual image on the lenses. The image resolution of the final Icis model with the Bold index will be 800x600 pixels, but the prototypes available from the middle of this year will have more modest parameters.

"Our main competitor is Google Glass, but the approach chosen by Laforge Optical specialists in creating Icis differs radically from the concept of competing companies. We are focused on creating a gadget that strangers would not pay close attention to," the CEO and Corey Mack, founder of Laforge Optical.

"Smart glasses" Icis are a symbiosis of modern fashion trends in accessories and the main technological solutions used in devices like Google Glass. True, in this case, the owner of such a gadget will not need to constantly look away at the display, which is not very conveniently located in the upper right corner - the entire surface of the Icis lenses will become an interactive display.

One of the innovative tasks set before the developers of Laforge Optical is to solve the problems of software compatibility of Icis with various platforms. For this, the SocialFlo application was created, which is responsible for sending notifications from installed applications on your mobile device and operator network. You just need to download the software to your smartphone and sync it with the Icis smart glasses via Bluetooth.

The creators of the device noted that their gadget will have three main modes of operation: normal, active (with a limit on the number of notifications displayed) and the "Drive" mode, which will filter all transmitted information that is not related to the process of driving a car. Icis will also go on sale in three different versions, giving the buyer the right to choose exactly the style that he most sympathizes with.

As for the cost of new items, here the price is differentiated depending on the type of kit and version of the device. By leaving a deposit of $ 220 to participate in the testing program, you can get acquainted with the early prototype of the gadget. If you want to become the owner of the basic Icis Early Beta Kit (IEBK) immediately and without any obligations, you will need to pay $820 for the device. In this case, you will be able to start full-fledged testing in the summer of this year. At the end of 2014, the next modification will appear - Icis Early Kit (IBK) at a price of $420, and you can upgrade the previous version of "smart glasses" to the IEK version by sending your gadget back to the manufacturer. It will also be possible to exchange the Icis Early Kit for the already serial version of Icis, paying an additional $200 for this.

The final release, which implies the launch of the Icis Bold model, is scheduled for early 2015. Here, buyers can already choose from three stylistic solutions for the gadget. The technical characteristics of the novelty will also change: the resolution of the lenses will be equal to 800x600 pixels, while in IEBK and IBK it was, according to preliminary information, 640x480 pixels.
