Hyperloop analogue tested in China

20.01.2023

The China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC) has conducted the first successful launches of a transportation system similar to Elon Musk's Hyperloop. The test was carried out using a full-sized passenger capsule.

CASIC engineers conducted a series of three trial runs of a maglev capsule (superconducting magnets or electrodynamic suspension, EDS) in Datong, Shanxi province. The speed of the capsule reached 50 km/h. Next-generation capsules are planned to carry passengers and cargo at 1000 kilometers per hour or even faster in an "almost" vacuum tube. If all goes according to plan, this type of transport network will become the fastest land transport system in the world.

Fast high-speed trains can run at speeds up to 350 km/h. They could move even faster, but then the drift of the rails and energy consumption will increase significantly. And the technology of magnetic levitation, on which the Hyperloop is based, also eliminates friction that wears out the rails, and the vacuum tube reduces air resistance.

SpaceX founder Elon Musk first introduced the idea of Hyperloop (a system of vacuum tunnels in which high-speed trains move) back in 2012 and created Boring to bring this idea to life, but the project has not yet been implemented, as the company has encountered a number of technical problems. and financial. problems. Does this mean that China can become a leader in the field of "vacuum" transportation, the first in the world to achieve a historic goal? Time will show.

China now has the world's largest high-speed rail network, with a total length of over 42 km. Also, the government of the country has ambitious plans to increase the maximum speed of its trains to 400 km per hour in the next two years.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Wind Turbine Challenergy Resistant to High Winds 28.02.2021

The Japanese company Challenergy has developed turbines for power generation that can withstand wind speeds of up to 40 m/s versus 25 m/s found in conventional blade-type generators. Structurally, the turbines of the Magnus VAWT family have the following feature - due to wind energy, not the blades rotate, but vertically oriented cylinders with higher dynamic stability. The classic solution with blades allows you to work safely in the wind speed range from 4 to 25 m/s, at higher speeds the rotation stops to prevent damage to the installation.

Six months ago, Challenergy launched a 10 kW experimental wind turbine on an island in Japan. The service life of the turbine is twenty years, it will allow supplying the surrounding area with electricity, regardless of external sources. A similar power plant will appear in the Philippines, and its installation and purchase will be partially subsidized by the Japanese government. The Japanese company intends to begin commercial deliveries of turbines by the end of this year.

The 10 kW version of the plant costs about $188. The electricity generated by it is twice as expensive as that obtained using traditional windmills. Installations of a new type also have restrictions on the maximum power. The manufacturer intends to occupy a market niche associated with the provision of electricity to remote islands that are not connected to the power grid. In this case, the use of wind turbines is still more profitable than the use of diesel generators. Typhoons often occur in island areas, so Challenergy turbines have a certain competitive advantage.

This year the company expects to sell up to twenty power plants, next year it can be increased to 50-100 units. By 2025, Challenergy expects to develop 100kW turbines as well as a 1000kW offshore floating plant.
