External DVD recorders from IO Data

IO DataI-O Data has announced the DVRP UT4 and DVRP-UN4 portable DVD writers.

The recorders will be available for sale at the end of April, but for now the drive will be sold in Japan. They cost 33390 yen and 28875 yen, or approximately $285 and $260 respectively.

The DVRP-UT4 uses a TEAC DV-W24E drive, connects to a computer via a USB 2.0 interface, and can burn DVD-RAM discs at 2x speed, DVD-R at 4x, DVD+R/RW at 4x. DVD-RW - from 4x. CD-R "blanks" with 16x and CD-RW - with 8x.

The DVRP-UN4 is based on the NEC ND-5500A drive. The recorder is connected to the computer via USB 2.0. Unlike DVRP-UT4, UN4 does not support DVD-RAM and "writes" CD-Rs at 16x speed.

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. Scientists from the University of California at Berkeley (USA) have found neurons in the brain, the stimulation of which causes dreams.

Neurons in the ventral side of the medulla oblongata, whose main mediator is gamma-aminobutyric acid, are active during REM sleep, but until now it was thought that they only provide muscle inhibition, preventing the body from moving during sleep.

In a new study, it was found that the activation of these neurons is enough for the animal to enter REM sleep in two seconds. Having provided mice with the synthesis of light-sensitive receptor proteins in a given area of ​​the brain in a given type of neuron, the scientists irradiated and selectively activated those neurons that carry the receptor label.

Observing the work of the brain using electroencephalography, it was found that exposure during non-REM sleep in 94% of cases leads to the transition of sleep to a fast phase, which subjectively corresponds to the appearance of dreams.

Among these nerve cells, two groups can be distinguished: those that transmit information lower, to the spinal cord, and those that send it higher, to the midbrain and hypothalamus. It is the second group of neurons that is responsible for "turning on" dreams.
