Highly absorbent patch

26.12.2022

Scientists have been able to turn the hydrogel into a patch that can be folded like regular tissue and torn like paper.

Usually it is not a big problem for us to wipe the meadow with a rag or kitchen paper. But if you spilled a lot of water on the table, then cleaning can sometimes be annoying.

Scientists from the University of Maryland in the USA came to the rescue under the leadership of Srinivasa Raghavan. They developed a hydrogel fabric that absorbs three times more water or other water-based liquids than conventional fabric.

A hydrogel is a material consisting of polymer molecules that absorbs water well, but is not as macroscopically porous as cloth or paper.

The essence of the achievement of Raghavan and his colleagues is that they were able to turn the hydrogel into a patch that can be folded like a regular fabric and torn like paper.

To obtain the result, the researchers first soaked the hydrogel in acid, alkali, and other substances. Just like a mixture of baking soda and vinegar, the hydrogel then began to form bubbles of carbon dioxide, causing the material to foam a little.

The researchers then pressed the material thinly between two sheets of glass and treated it with ultraviolet light. Finally, they dipped it in a solution of alcohol and glycerin and dried it with a hair dryer. Thus, a soft and elastic hydrogel patch was made. A flat sheet retains its useful properties for at least a year when stored under everyday conditions.

The experiment showed that the hydrogel pad absorbed 25 milliliters of water thrown on the table in 20 seconds. On the other hand, an ordinary cloth left 40 percent water on the table under the same conditions.

During the experiment, the hydrogel also worked well with liquids thicker than water, such as blood.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Disney Hair Copy Technology 14.08.2014

Modern possibilities of 3D printing allow us to produce almost any item for us, from prostheses to complex industrial mechanisms. However, there is one thing with which devices for the manufacture of three-dimensional objects have certain difficulties - modeling complex human hairstyles in the manufacture of personalized figurines that are popular today.

Developers from Disney, who recently introduced a software algorithm for transforming almost any 3D shape into a spinning top, have demonstrated a solution to a new problem. In order to accurately recreate each person's individual hair with its structure, length, strands, parting and other aspects, Disney specialists proposed a new technique for capturing hair scanned on the head.

The essence of the new method is as follows: the mechanism for recognizing your hairstyle is now based on a complex program that represents the hairline as a closed variety of surfaces. The developed method divides the hair on the head into certain color zones, each of which corresponds to one or another hairstyle parameters in a particular place.

Simply put, when scanning, the program does not simply capture sections of hair and their relief at a given point, but models the hairstyle as a whole, as if you were wearing a helmet on your head. This will make it possible to achieve an incredible similarity of figurines with real prototypes, because before, instead of scanned hairstyles unique for each person, standard and primitive sets of virtual 3D wigs were used.
