Smart watch with a living organism inside

25.12.2022

Scientists at the University of Chicago have come up with an unusual solution to the problem of changing gadgets too often and creating electronic garbage profusely - they have created a smart watch, which is provided by mucous - the easiest organism to feed and care for, almost like a Tamagotchi. The solution even allows you to establish an emotional connection with the smart watch.

The use of a conductive protozoan organism - the plasmoid slime Physarum polycephalum - made it possible to create a smart watch that works only if the body in the body is healthy and supplied with food. In fact, the watch is a kind of simple cyborg with interconnected living and inanimate parts.

It is expected that the presence of a living organism in electronics will prevent people from mindlessly changing gadgets at will. Irresponsible consumption leads to an increase in the volume of electronic waste on the planet - 40 million tons are added annually. The study of how a living device affects people's behavior showed that this changed the attitude of users to the technologies used - in fact, we are talking about a two-way mutually beneficial cooperation between the watch and its owner.

Surveys showed that when using worn gadgets, it was purely consumer one-way use, while the interaction with the experimental model resembled two-way communication, since it was a living organism - many could not just throw away the watch or just put it in the closet indefinitely.

The prototype "live" clock is able to show the time and is equipped with a heart rate sensor. The organism is housed in a special recess in the watch case, and the user must regularly feed it a mixture of water and oatmeal to encourage growth. When the body reaches the other side of the notch, a conductive circuit is activated, allowing the heart rate sensor to work. Also, the body goes into sleep mode if it is not fed - it can be brought back to life after days, months or even years.

The organization of human-computer interaction is mainly focused on improving productivity, but here it was said about the emphasis on daily care and nutrition, so the result of the study is partly a work of art.

Scientists conducted experiments with five participants, during which the latter wore hours for two weeks. The emotional connection turned out to be more significant than when using toys like Tamagotchi - in such cases, after death, it is easy to reboot. Moreover, the participants in the experiment experienced quite a lot of stress when they were ordered to stop feeding the creature in the watch case, experiencing guilt or even grief.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

TRACO THN/WIR DC/DC Converters for Harsh Environments 01.06.2021

TRACO has launched a new generation of DC/DC converters for harsh railway applications - the THN/WIR family. It includes three series: THN 10WIR, THN 15WIR and THN 20WIR, for output power from 10W, 15W and 20W respectively.

The entire line of these products is available in standard 1"x1" metal cases, has a 4:1 wide input (with a nominal voltage of 24/48/110 V), 3000 V input-output isolation, and a wide operating temperature range of -40. ..85/90/105°C (depending on the series) and meets the requirements of EN 50155 and EN 61373 (for railway applications).

The converters are characterized by high efficiency (up to 91%), have protection against short circuit, overload, overvoltage and undervoltage; there is a remote on-off function with the ability to adjust the output voltage (Trim).

Products are designed for industrial use in difficult conditions, including railway transport.
