Scientists have learned to erase memories

27.10.2022

Controlled sleep deletion of unwanted memories can help many people clear traumatic memories. Some information stored in our brain is not needed by a person, but it is impossible to forget it. Scientists were able to achieve a targeted removal of unnecessary memories.

Scientists have been working for a long time to unravel the secrets of the complex system of the human brain. Recent research has brought them a little closer to this goal.

The memory erasure theory was studied by a group of scientists from the University of York. They began by studying sounds that, during sleep, can enhance or, conversely, minimize the significance of memories. This approach can help many people living with traumatic memories.

Scientists observed 29 people who participated in the experiment. For them, different pairs of words were shown on the monitor, with the first word always being an object, and the second showing some place or person. Participants were shown 60 pairs of words in different compositions: object + person or place. A sample of 120 associations was released.

When several words appeared on the screen, the name of the item was spoken aloud. After that, the associations that had arisen were checked for the tested, they themselves chose a pair of six proposed options. Then, in the laboratory, people fell asleep under the control of scientists, who included an audio recording of 30 words-objects in a certain phase of sleep.

After that, the association test was again conducted. The experiment showed that the ability to recall the first word learned in combination with the word indicating the object increased if the pronunciation of the word-object was called in a dream. And if the word was not called, then the ability to memorize decreased. In addition, the researchers found that the ability to recall a second word along with the same item name was reduced.

Thus, scientists managed to simulate a situation where there are two competing memories and learned how to influence a person so that he forgets one of them.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Spent spacecraft stages are returning 08.01.2012

The self-promotional space company Blue Origin, founded by Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos, came into the public eye when one of its experimental craft crashed in West Texas last summer. This unmanned ship, having lost control at an altitude of 13,5 km, carried out the command to self-destruct.

"None of us wanted this outcome," Bezos wrote on the Blue Origin website. Now this company is working on the task of how to make the spent booster stages return to Earth on their own so that they can be used in the next launches. Now booster stages simply fall into the ocean, where they are searched for by special vessels.

Private companies are counting on substantial savings by forcing spent stages to land on Earth unaided.
