The most powerful stable magnetic field

19.08.2022

Scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences at their High Magnetic Field Laboratory were able to break the world record by achieving a stable magnetic field strength of 45,22 Tesla. This is 45 thousand times more powerful than the magnetic field of a conventional refrigerator magnet.

Chinese scientists managed to break the previous record for the strongest stable magnetic field, which was achieved by American scientists from the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, USA in 1999. Then scientists with the help of their hybrid magnet achieved a magnetic field power of 45 Tesla.

Both American and Chinese physicists continue their work to improve hybrid magnets to create powerful stable magnetic fields. The hybrid magnet uses two different ways to create a magnetic field: with an outer superconducting ring and with an inner Bitter magnet. Using these two technologies, you can create the strongest stable magnetic fields.

Back in 2016, Chinese physicists approached the Americans and created a magnetic field with a force of 40 Tesla. Since then, they have strived to break the record of the Americans and they succeeded.

"In order to achieve the result of 45,22 Tesla for a stable magnetic field, we changed the structure of the magnet and created new materials, as well as optimized the performance of the hybrid magnet," explained Guangli Kuang from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

To achieve a stable magnetic field of 45,22 Tesla, the Chinese magnet required a power consumption of 26,9 megawatts. According to this indicator, Chinese physicists also surpassed the Americans, because they achieved a magnetic field strength of 45 Tesla with a magnet power consumption of 30 megawatts.

"Our hybrid magnet creates a magnetic field that improves the experimental conditions for scientists who conduct research in the field of materials science, and this magnet will also play a key role in the study of magnetic fields of different strengths," Kuang said.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Catch the neutrino 05.07.2011

Possible messages from extraterrestrial civilizations are usually searched for in the radio range, and lately in the optical range (hoping that we can be signaled by powerful lasers). However, American astrophysicists John Learn and Anthony Zee believe that it is necessary to listen to neutrino fluxes.

Unlike electromagnetic waves, these particles are hardly absorbed or scattered by interstellar gas and dust. True, it is very difficult to catch them. On Earth, physicists use the so-called neutrino telescopes for this - huge reservoirs of water or other liquid, or an array of ice. A small part of the neutrino, flying through liquid or ice, nevertheless reacts with matter and gives itself away.

But it is possible that higher civilizations already possess much more advanced means of capturing and generating or modulating neutrino fluxes. Perhaps, Lernd and Zee say, it makes sense to look at the data already available on neutrino fluxes: could there be encrypted messages from aliens among them?

By the way, the idea is not so new: the plot of Stanislav Lem's science fiction novel "The Voice of the Lord" (1968) is based precisely on attempts to decipher the message of another civilization that came in a stream of neutrinos.
