Improving the energy efficiency of existing wind farms

16.08.2022

Modeling and testing have shown that almost any wind farm can increase its energy efficiency if each individual turbine is operated as an integral part of the entire array, and not as a separate object. The technology was proposed by scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is ready to broadcast it for any current and future wind farm projects.

Today, wind turbines produce about 5% of electrical energy in the world. The vast majority of them are part of large wind farms with dozens or even hundreds of turbines whose air turbulences can influence each other. Obviously, if the mutual influence of turbines is taken into account, then the total work of the entire field of wind generators can be optimized, which was studied by MIT specialists together with colleagues from other institutes.

Looking ahead, we note that optimization in terms of the combined effect of wind turbines on the generation of wind turbines makes it possible to increase the generation of each turbine by 1,2 at any wind strength and by 3% at the optimal wind strength (from 6 to 8 m/s). With all the wind turbines installed worldwide, this translates into a tangible result of 31 TWh of additional and virtually free electricity generation per year or $950 million in additional revenue for operators, equivalent to installing 3600 new wind turbines.

Managing each turbine in the interests of the entire array will solve another problem - significantly reduce the area allocated for wind farms. In the ideal case, wind generators should be located as far apart as possible in order to exclude the mutual influence of turbulent air flows on the blades. The strategy of controlling the angle of rotation of each turbine, even to unfavorable values for it, taking into account all the wind turbines and the entire fleet, allows wind generators to be located very, very tightly, which saves space and reduces associated costs.

The researchers tested their strategy on a private wind farm in India. Mathematical calculations are fully justified. Scientists are confident that the model they proposed can optimize the energy efficiency of any existing or future wind farm. Each farm will have its own efficiency in optimization, which depends on many factors, but on average, each of them will be able to work 1,2-3 better.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

New rover tested 26.03.2019

NASA has tested the new Mars 2020 rover. The device is expected to be launched to the Red Planet next year.

The new NASA rover, according to the agency's plans, will be launched in July 2020. The spacecraft will look for answers to some of the key questions about the Red Planet, including looking for signs of habitability in the distant past. The rover will also be equipped with a drill and collect soil samples.

However, in order to successfully complete the mission, the rover must first successfully reach the surface of Mars and land in the Lake Lake crater. The landing process will take about seven minutes, and it is especially difficult because the device will be controlled autonomously, using special software, and the mission team will not be able to interfere with it in any way (they will only receive information about the successful or unsuccessful landing).

Now the mission specialists are testing the necessary hardware and software parts of the rover. Recently, in January 2019, the first test called Systems Test 1 (ST1) was made, according to NASA. During this test, engineers launched the rover's electronic systems and tested the vehicle's software in various simulated phases of its journey to Mars. In general, these tests were recognized as successful, but noted a number of points that could be improved.

The Mars 2020 rover is expected to be launched on July 17, 2020 from the Cape Canaveral launch site using an Atlas 541 launch vehicle. The device is expected to reach the surface of Mars on February 18, 2021.
