quantum integrated circuit

30.06.2022

Australian developers reported significant progress in the development of quantum computers. Based on almost 20 years of scientific work by Australian teams, a young company from Australia - Silicon Quantum Computing (SQC) - was able to create the world's first quantum integrated circuit. The chip is able to simulate the behavior of just one molecule - polyacetylene, but it does it much better than classical computers.

Designed and manufactured in Sydney, SQC's Quantum Processor is an analog solution for simulating the quantum states of molecules. The company still only dreams of a real quantum processor with the ability to correct errors. But even the molecular simulator promises a breakthrough for the field once such chips are commercially produced.

A quantum chemical compound simulator will help you discover unusual materials and substances for pharmaceuticals and industry. Now we cannot even imagine what properties these materials will have, because such calculations are either impossible on a conventional computer, or will take years, centuries, and even longer as the connections become more complex.

The creation of the first SQC quantum integrated circuit required the implementation of three separate technologies. First, it was necessary to create elements of atomic size so small that their energy levels would equalize, and electrons could easily pass through them. Secondly, it was necessary to implement the possibility of adjusting the energy levels of each element separately, as well as all elements together, in order to control the passage of quantum information.

Finally, it was important to learn how to control the distance between the elements with an accuracy of less than a nanometer, so that the elements remained close enough to each other, but this would not interfere with the quantum coherent transfer of electrons along the chain. All three technological tasks were successfully solved and, as the developers emphasize, this happened two years ahead of schedule.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

5G communication module for cars 20.10.2019

The South Korean company LG Innotek has introduced an automotive communication module that supports 5G networks. According to the manufacturer, this is the world's first 5G module for cars. It is built on the Qualcomm element base.

The design of the module includes a modem, memory and RF circuits - about 480 components in total. The module provides real-time traffic information exchange, precise location determination, V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything - between the vehicle and surrounding objects) communication and transmission of large amounts of data. In other words, it performs the key functions required for fully autonomous driving without driver intervention.

Using 5G technology for an in-vehicle communication module has proved challenging because it uses high frequencies, resulting in more signal loss than LTE (Long Term Evolution, 4G mobile technology). Another problem is the high heat dissipation.

However, 5G provides an important advantage: the module introduces a delay of 1 ms or less, which is an order of magnitude less than the delay of the LTE module. As a result, for example, if a self-driving vehicle traveling at a speed of 100 km/h detects an obstacle and activates the emergency braking function, in the case of an LTE module, braking starts after the vehicle has traveled 1,4 m, and with a 5G module, only 2,8 cm.

The dimensions of the module are 40 x 50 x 3,5 mm, so it is easy to install it anywhere inside or outside the car. Compatibility with LTE modules allows you to replace existing LTE modules without changing the system design.

The module can be used regardless of region or vehicle type as it complies with 3GPP Release 15.
