The smallest remote controlled robot

Scientists at Northwestern University in Illinois (USA) have demonstrated the smallest remote-controlled robot, the dimensions of which are only 0,5 mm in all axes. With its tiny dimensions, the machine can walk, jump, turn and curve - without the use of hydraulics or electricity.

The mechanism is based on an alloy with a shape memory effect, which, when creating a structure, is deformed using a thin coating of glass. When heated, the alloy returns to its original shape, and when cooled, the glass coating re-deforms. Heating is carried out using a laser, and due to the miniature size of the mechanism, heat dissipates very quickly: up to 10 cycles in 1 second.

The direction of the laser beam determines the direction in which the robot moves, and its average speed is about half the length of the body per second. The authors of the project experimented with several forms of mechanism, including a tripod that can walk on water, spiral limb structures that allow robots to jump, and some other options that allow for other movements.

The head of the research group, Professor John A. Rogers, said that in practice, such robots can be used both in industry, in the repair and assembly of complex structures, and in medicine - to stop bleeding and remove tumors. True, in some cases it will be necessary to solve the problem of where and how to position the laser.

Garmin introduced the nuviCam LMTHD multifunctional car GPS navigator.

The novelty is equipped with a 6,1-inch display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, a slot for memory cards microSD (included media capacity of 4 GB) and Bluetooth wireless adapter. A special magnetic mount allows you to quickly remove the device from the holder on the windshield for use outside the vehicle: in this case, the battery will provide up to 30 minutes of battery life.

On the back side of the case there is a built-in camera, thanks to which the DVR functions are implemented. Additionally, a rear view camera can be connected to the navigator to simplify parking and reversing.
