Augmented Reality Contact Lenses

12.04.2022

California-based company Mojo Vision has created a new prototype contact lens with augmented reality technology. After reworking the electronics and changing the power supply, the engineers prepared the device for testing. The first software and user interface was also developed.

The company unveiled its first prototype two years ago, when engineers managed to create a display, an oxygen saturation system, a microchip and energy management tools, and developed eye-tracking algorithms. Even then, the lenses looked like ordinary cosmetic contact lenses that change the color of the eyes, although they hid a whole computer with tiny displays, batteries and more.

Since then, Mojo Vision has invested in lens software development, created the underlying operating system code, and created the first user interface components. This software opens up the possibility of further development and testing of various lens usage scenarios by consumers and businesses.

The electronic filling of the lenses is located on a rigid gas-permeable plastic, unlike the material from which ordinary contact lenses are made. Miniature devices include accelerometers, gyroscopes, a magnetometer, and radio communications. In addition, there is a microchip for power management, an image sensor and a microprocessor.

One of the main differences between the new prototype and the one that was presented in 2020 is the rejection of power transmission over a wireless connection in favor of a battery, since inductive coupling did not provide uninterrupted power.

Initially, the company identified as its target group people with low vision, for whom the lenses will help to better see road signs and other necessary information. As well as athletes for whom it is important to receive up-to-date information without being distracted from the race or match. But while the developers are not ready to talk about Mojo Lens as a product - in the coming years, the device will be optimized, debugging applications and testing, which will show who the first customers of the company will be.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Complete absorption of light 24.12.2008

The Americans have created a coating that absorbs 96,21% of the sunlight falling on it from any angle.

A conventional silicon solar cell can convert no more than 67,4% of the light falling on it into electricity. Since its efficiency is already low - in the best samples it approaches 40% - each lost quantum reduces efficiency, which means it increases the cost of solar electricity. Moreover, the battery must expend energy on turning - in order to always remain at the optimal angle to the incident rays. Otherwise, many rays will be reflected from the polished silicon surface.

Scientists from Rensselaer University, led by Professor Ling Shuanyu, have created a coating that allows a solar cell to absorb light from almost any direction.

This coating consists of seven layers with a thickness of 50 to 100 microns. In each of them, titanium dioxide nanorods placed in a silicon dioxide matrix are located at a certain angle to the surface. Rays of light are scattered in the resulting "forest" and, in the end, fall on the battery, but they can no longer break out.
