Electricity on the moon

10.02.2022

Katrin Kristmann, a doctoral student at the Department of Chemistry and Materials Science at TalTech (Tallinn University of Technology), has started research aimed at developing a technology for manufacturing monograin solar cells on the Moon.

The results of the research activities are planned to be used to provide electricity to future lunar outposts of the European Space Agency (ESA) and its international partners. A lunar outpost is planned to be established at the Moon's South Pole in the coming decades.

The sandpaper-like solar cell is based on the monograin powder technology developed by TalTech researchers, where the solar cell consists of thousands of small 50 micrometer diameter crystals embedded in a polymer in one continuous layer.

Microcrystals absorb sunlight. To transmit solar energy, these microcrystals are covered with buffer and window layers. Thus, each crystal works like a small individual solar panel and generates electricity.

This type of solar cell has many advantages, combining the advantages of a high-efficiency single-crystal material with low-cost production of roll-to-roll panels, which allows the production of flexible, lightweight and cost-effective solar panels to cover large areas at minimal cost.

There are no restrictions on the size and shape of solar modules. The microcrystals used in a monograin solar cell can be obtained from elements found in the soil or regolith of the Moon.

A potential material for microcrystals could be pyrite FeS2, or, in other words, "fool's gold". Its elements, iron and sulfur, are quite common in the lunar regolith, and the theoretical efficiency of a pyrite solar cell is as high as 25%.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

A new method for converting carbon dioxide into methane 02.03.2020

Japanese scientists led by Waseda University professor Yasushi Sekine proposed to carry out a low-temperature catalytic reaction for the synthesis of hydrogen and carbon dioxide into methane using an electric field. The existing industrial process for converting carbon dioxide into methane through the catalytic reaction of hydrogen and carbon dioxide has a number of technological difficulties. In particular, the yield of methane is highly dependent on the required temperature, which should be between 300 and 400 degrees Celsius.

Scientists have proposed a new, low-temperature method (100 degrees Celsius), which produces more efficient production of methane from carbon dioxide than other similar methods.

The developed method uses the interaction of carbon dioxide with nanoparticles of cerium oxide on a ruthenium catalyst when an electric field is applied. Such a catalyst has shown high and stable catalytic activity for the conversion of carbon dioxide to methane by hydrogenation in an electric field.

Researchers claim that this method can be used to obtain methane from carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere by industry. The gas obtained in this way can not only replace fossil fuels, but also prevent global warming in the long term.

The method of producing methane using electricity consists of two stages. Through electrolysis, water decomposes into oxygen and hydrogen. The hydrogen is then mixed in the presence of a catalyst with carbon dioxide to produce methane.

The Power-to-gas technology, developed in Germany in 2008, is based on the chemical reaction of obtaining methane from carbon dioxide. The idea was to channel the excess electricity generated by power plants into gas production. Thus, it is possible not only to "storage electricity", then using gas as a fuel for power plants, but also to obtain gas for industry.
