James Webb telescope launched into orbit

27.12.2021

NASA successfully launched the James Webb telescope. The telescope was jointly built by 17 countries, it took 25 years and 10 billion dollars.

Webb is much larger, more complex and more powerful than the Hubble Space Telescope, which has been studying the skies from Earth orbit for more than 30 years. Another key difference between Hubble and Webb is that the old telescope was designed to be serviced by astronauts on spacewalks, having been repaired and upgraded 5 times between 1993 and 2009. But the Webb will be too far away for people to reach it.

James Webb is the latest orbital infrared observatory to replace the Hubble telescope. The new telescope is XNUMX times more sensitive to wavelength than Hubble.

Scientists believe that the device will be able to expand mankind's understanding of the Universe, as it is able to reveal the history of the formation of the first stars and galaxies, as well as to study black holes, dark matter and galaxies far from the solar planet in more depth.

Telescope equipment is capable of collecting infrared light and examining it. In particular, the huge mirror consists of 18 hexagons. Its diameter is six and a half meters, and the combined area is 25 square meters.

At the same time, the device also has a thermal screen, the dimensions of which are 21,1 by 14,6 meters. The screen consists of layers that will protect the telescope from the sun's rays so that it does not overheat.

The telescope also has: a near-infrared camera that will form an image for the observatory; a device for working in the middle range of infrared radiation - will allow you to obtain data on distant objects (the formation of new stars or faintly visible comets); spectrograph of the near infrared range - will allow you to obtain data on the physical and chemical properties of objects; fine pointing sensors with a near-infrared imaging device and a slitless spectrograph - will allow you to obtain images in high quality, detect exoplanets (planets that are located outside the solar system) and determine their characteristics.

The launch of the telescope is scheduled for the summer of 2022.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Jupiter doesn't revolve around the sun 09.03.2021

The earth revolves around the sun. Mars revolves around the sun. Venus, Mercury, Neptune, Uranus, and Saturn too. The Moon and the International Space Station revolve around the Earth. But with the giant planet Jupiter, everything is somewhat more complicated.

When in outer space a less massive body revolves around a more massive one, the light does not describe perfect circles around the center of the heavy. In fact, both rotate, and the center of this rotation is the center of mass of both bodies. If the difference in mass is very large - as, for example, between our planet and the Sun - then the center of mass is located inside a more massive body, at a negligibly small distance from its geometric center. But if the mass of two bodies is comparable, then the center of mass can also be located in space outside both bodies.

The mass of Jupiter is 2,5 times the mass of all other objects in the solar system. The mass of Jupiter is 1 kg, and the mass of the Sun is 898 kg, with a difference of only 600 times.

Such a relatively small difference in mass shifts the point around which both the Sun and Jupiter move, mutually attracted by gravity. This point is, according to calculations, at a distance equal to 7% of the solar radius from the surface of the star. In other words, Jupiter, the only planet in the solar system, revolves around a point in space that is not inside the Sun, but outside it.
