Coronavirus vaccine in the form of a patch

Scientists at the University of Queensland (Australia) have successfully injected an anti-coronavirus drug developed by the University of Texas (USA) into experimental mice using a patch with microneedles.

The special patch was developed by scientists from Queensland together with the Australian biotechnology company Vaxxas. It has high-density microneedles coated with the drug.

The patch is applied for a few seconds to the skin, through which the drug is absorbed into the body. The feeling when applying this method of injection is like pressing a nail. Using a patch, the scientists administered the Hexapro vaccine, developed by the University of Texas. For this, a stabilized form of the adhesion protein is used, with which the SARS-CoV-2 virus attaches to other cells and generates an immune response to it.

The results of Hexapro's preclinical trials, published in Science Advances, showed that administering the vaccine through a patch was more effective than using a needle: mice produced an immune response to COVID-19 faster.

Further, the patch vaccine is planned to be tested on humans. The developers hope that this will speed up the vaccination of people around the world, primarily in low- and middle-income countries.

“The dried vaccine on a patch retains its properties for at least 30 days at a temperature of 25 ° C and for a week at a temperature of 40 ° C. Therefore, it does not need a cold temperature regime, like some current analogues,” the researchers emphasized. .
