Smart backpack for the visually impaired

04.04.2021

Researchers at the University of Georgia have developed their own backpack system to help visually impaired people better understand and navigate their environment.

The developed backpack uses the Luxonis OAK-D spatial camera, which in turn has an integrated artificial intelligence processor in conjunction with the image processing technology developed by Intel - Movidius. The built-in 4K camera, which captures information about the depth of space, and is also able to recognize objects by their colors, can be placed either in a vest or in a special fanny pack. The overall system for this technology uses a set of tools from Intel called OpenVINO. It is necessary in order to draw various logical conclusions. All this miracle can work up to eight hours when using a special pocket-sized battery placed in a belt pack.

For even better orientation in space, the backpack contains a special, very light computing device with a GPS unit. The latest system can detect obstacles and report it to the user. You will immediately know exactly where they are with the help of special sound prompts. Also a very useful feature is that the system of such a backpack will be able to read road signs and determine changes in your height. For example, the technology can inform the owner that a stop sign is present at a pedestrian crossing.

The system will tell you when there is a curb in front of the person. When used with the system paired with Bluetooth wireless headphones, you can control it with your voice, ask you to describe your surroundings, or save your GPS location with a specific name.

The developers assume that such a system is as unobtrusive as possible and will not attract any special and additional attention to its user when used in public.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Epson Home Cinema 3 and 1040 1440LCD Projectors 08.09.2015

Epson has announced two new projectors for the home. The range of the manufacturer was supplemented by 3LCD models Home Cinema 1040 and Home Cinema 1440.

Both devices are capable of projecting a widescreen image with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and up to 300 inches diagonally. The devices are equipped with a USB interface and two HDMI ports with support for MHL technology, which allows you to connect compatible smartphones or tablets to the projectors, which will also be charged at the same time.

Home Cinema 1040 and Home Cinema 1440 are characterized by maximum brightness levels of 3000 and 4400 lumens, respectively. The contrast ratio is 15:000 and 1:10. Another difference between the new products is the support for Farouja DCDi technology, which eliminates visual distortion of the picture, increasing its quality. This solution is implemented in the Home Cinema 000 model. It also has the function of dividing the image into two areas in which different pictures or video streams are displayed.

The Epson Home Cinema 1040 will cost $800 and the other model will cost $1700.

Both products will go on sale in September 2015. They will be covered by a two-year manufacturer's warranty.
