Acid batteries "do not like to be out of work for a long time." Deep self-discharge can be fatal for them. If the car is parked for a long time, then the problem arises: what to do with the battery. It is either given to someone to work, or sold, which is equally inconvenient.

I propose a fairly simple device that can serve both for charging batteries and for their long-term storage in working condition.

Charger for car batteries

From the secondary winding of the transformer T1, the current in which is limited by the inclusion in series with the primary winding of the ballast capacitor (C1 or C1 + C2), the current is supplied to the diode-thyristor bridge, the load of which is the battery (GB1). As a regulating element, an automobile generator voltage regulator (RNG) for 14 V of any type is used, designed for generators with a grounded brush. I tested the regulator type 121.3702 and the integral -YA112A. When using the "integral" conclusions "B" and "C" are connected together with "+" GB1. The output "Sh" is connected to the circuit of the control electrodes of the thyristors. Thus, a voltage of 14V is maintained on the battery at a charging current determined by the capacitance of capacitor C2, which is approximately calculated by the formula:

where Iz is the charging current (A), U2 is the voltage of the secondary winding when the transformer is "normally" turned on (V), U1 is the mains voltage.

Transformer - any, with a power of 150 ... 250 VA, with a voltage on the secondary winding of 20 ... 36 V. Bridge diodes - any for a rated current of at least 10 A. Thyristors - KU202 V, G, etc.

S1 is used to switch between charging and storage modes. The charging current is selected equal to 0,1 of the numerical value of the battery capacity, and the storage current is 1 ... 1,5A.

If possible, then periodically, approximately once every two weeks, it is desirable to discharge the battery with a current of 2Iz with control of the electrolyte temperature.

The device requires almost no settings. It may be necessary to clarify the capacitance of the capacitor by controlling the current with an ammeter. In this case, it is necessary to short-circuit terminals 15 and 67 (B, C and W).
