On the pages of the magazine, many different devices for preheating cathodes of a kinescope were considered before applying high voltage to the anode. In almost all the devices described earlier, after such a warm-up, the factory inclusion of the filament is restored. However, in my opinion, it does not take into account the fact that when the filament voltage is higher than the nominal (6,3 V) by at least 0,2 ... 0,3 V, the service life of the kinescope is significantly reduced.

It is no coincidence that overvoltage is considered the main reason for the failure of kinescopes before the expiration of the warranty period. Therefore, it is necessary to strictly control the value of the voltage applied to the filament. Given that the shape of the kinescope filament current is far from sinusoidal, conventional voltmeters are not suitable for measurement in this case.

For this purpose, I propose the simplest attachment to any ohmmeter, which allows you to measure the effective value of voltage of any form with quite sufficient accuracy.

The schematic diagram of the device is shown in the figure. OEP-13 optocoupler can be replaced with OEP-9 - OEP-12. Resistor R1 is selected so that the input voltage at the optocoupler does not exceed the passport value, in our case it is 5,8 V.

Method for measuring the filament voltage of a kinescope

The prefix is calibrated when a constant stabilized voltage is applied to the input with simultaneous measurement of the output impedance of the optocoupler. In the case of using the attachment to control only the filament voltage of the kinescope, it is enough to calibrate it at one point (6,3 V).

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Men get the flu more than women 08.01.2018

Scientists at Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada studied scientific papers on the epidemiology of viral respiratory diseases, including influenza, and stated that men are more difficult than women to survive seasonal colds.

In English there is an expression "male flu", which the Oxford and Cambridge dictionaries define as "a cold or similar mild ailment experienced by a man who exaggerates the severity of symptoms." If everyone believes that men exaggerate the severity of their condition, then their complaints may be paid less attention; because of this, men may receive insufficient treatment. According to statistics, more men die from respiratory diseases than women.

Scientific studies have shown that the immune response of female mice to infectious respiratory diseases is stronger than the immune response of males. These data led to the hypothesis that female sex hormones enhance the immune response. This assumption was confirmed by other studies, the authors of which showed that the female hormone estradiol weakens the pathological immune response, but increases the influx of immune cells into the lungs.

Scientists pay attention to publications proving that women tolerate certain types of flu shots easier than men. What evolutionary mechanisms are behind the different resistance of men and women to influenza is not known, in addition, most of the experiments were carried out on mice, not on humans, and human studies often did not take into account factors that affect the state of the immune system, such as smoking, and willingness to seek medical attention.
