When the owner of a SHAR PIXELS SH-V3HD digital video camera turned to me with a request to help in purchasing a charger (the complete one was lost during the trip), I agreed without hesitation. However, it turned out that it is almost impossible to buy a memory for this camera not only on the territory of Ukraine, but also abroad...

Non-standard memory for a digital camera
Fig. 1

This camera is powered by a built-in 3,6 V lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 1000 mAh. To connect the memory, the camera has a minUSB socket located on the front of its body. The owner of the camera remembered that the lost memory was marked "5 V / 1 A". Based on this information, a similar charger "TRAVEL CHARDER part NO: TC-300-X5" was purchased, the output parameters of which corresponded to the required ones. True, unlike the lost memory, instead of a cable ending in a miniUSB plug, it has a USB socket. Therefore, to connect the new charger to the miniUSB socket of the camera, we tried the standard adapter cable "USB-miniUSB" supplied with the camera (Fig. 1). However, despite the fact that both the charger and the cable were previously checked, the camera battery was not charging - its indicator LED was not lit.

Unfortunately, the search for information on the Internet was not successful - it was not possible to find the electrical circuits of the camera and its memory. But, as they say, chance helped. When I got acquainted with the charger "Switching Adapter, MODEL: DSA-6E-05EU, 5V, 1 A" of a similar AIPTEK video camera, it turned out that its nameplate contains information that the common wire (GND) enters the camera through pin 5 of the connector miniUSB, and +5 V - through its pin 4. It became clear why when the charger was connected using a standard adapter cable (Fig. 1), charging did not occur - pin 4 is not involved in its miniUSB plug.

When disassembling the purchased miniUSB plug, it turned out that there is pin 4 in it, but unlike the others, it does not have a lead for soldering the wire (Fig. 2). As it turned out later, in the standard use of the five-pin miniUSB connector, this pin is not used, so manufacturers, in order to save metal, install a shortened one instead of a "full" one.

I did not have to think long about the problem of the fourth contact of the miniUSB plug. Since the cable for connecting the charger with the "AIPTEK" camera is two-wire, this prompted the idea to replace the shortened pin 4 in the purchased miniUSB plug (which will end the connecting cable) with any of the pins 1-3. The easiest way is to use pin 2, since it, like pin 4, is located at the top of the plug contact group.

So, we disassemble the miniUSB connector plug and remove the contact group. Then, in its plastic fill, along the boundaries of contacts 2 and 4, we make cuts with a narrow edge of a flat file until it touches the contacts. Now they are easy to remove by pulling with tweezers. Having removed the short contact 4, carefully insert the former contact 2 into its seat with tweezers. Next, solder the wires of the two-wire cable to the contact 5 and the new contact 4, install the plastic insert with the modified contact group into the metal part of the miniUSB plug and, having connected its halves, put them on plastic clip from the plug kit.

It is advisable to solder the free ends of the cable directly to the mounting points on the memory board of its USB socket (firstly, it is easier, and secondly, the exclusion of an extra plug connection increases reliability). To do this, in the cover of the memory housing, next to the existing cutout for the USB socket, a hole is drilled along the diameter of the cable. After passing it through this hole, solder the wire coming from pin 4 of the miniUSB plug to pin 1 (+5 V) of the USB socket, and coming from pin 5 of the miniUSB to pin 4 (GND). Finally, the cable is fixed in the cover, for example, with Moment glue and put it in place. The appearance of the modified memory "TRAVEL CHARDER part NO: TC-300-X5" is shown in fig. 3.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

UAV for underground reconnaissance 18.03.2022

Norwegian scientists have developed the RMF-Owl drone, designed for underground reconnaissance. He knows how to avoid obstacles and avoid collisions.

The fact is that so far for robots to avoid obstacles in a confined space is a difficult task. The lack of access to the global navigation satellite system also interferes.

The new drone was pre-equipped with a durable housing made of multilayer carbon foam. It has four motors and a PixRacer R15 flight controller. The drone itself is 38 centimeters long and weighs 1,45 kilograms. It is capable of flying autonomously for ten minutes.

To determine the location, the drone uses lidar odometry and the CompSLAM simultaneous orientation and mapping system. He is assisted in reconnaissance by a local and global trajectory planner. In addition, the drone is able to map underground spaces and search for objects in them.

The drone has already been tested in a Norwegian mine: it planned a route without collisions in a narrow corridor and flew more than 6,6 meters in 200 minutes.
