Asynchronous single-phase electric motors with a starting winding are widely used in electric drives of various household appliances (washing machines, refrigerator compressor units), they are used by radio amateurs for their needs.

Having well-known advantages, such electric motors require the use of an additional device that provides automatic connection of the starting winding when turned on, as well as when the operation is stopped in cases of excessive short-term increase in load. In most cases, such a device, called a starter in everyday life, is a current relay, the winding of which is connected in series with the working winding of the motor. The high current of the working winding with a stationary rotor ensures the operation of the relay and the connection of the starting winding in specified cases. After the motor rotor accelerates, the current of the working winding decreases to the nominal value, the relay turns off the starting winding.

Known shortcomings of the relay (burning, closing of contacts, jamming of moving parts) cause its insufficient reliability and can lead to failure of the electric motor.

The author proposed an electronic device (patent UA273C1) that performs the same functions (Fig. 1).

The device contains only two elements: a triac VS, which ensures the inclusion of the starting winding of the motor, and a current transformer with a saturable magnetic circuit TR, which controls the triac.

The principle of operation of the device is illustrated by graphs in Fig.2.

The cross section of the magnetic circuit and the number of turns of the primary winding of the current transformer are chosen such that at a high current I, corresponding to the start mode, the magnetic flux F is limited as a result of the saturation of the magnetic circuit. In this case, the voltage U on its secondary winding will be a sequence of bipolar pulses coinciding in time with the beginning of the current half-cycles in the primary winding. The number of turns of the secondary winding of the current transformer and the order of its connection must be such that the amplitude of the pulses is sufficient to alternately unlock the triac, respectively, in the positive and negative half-cycles of the current.

As the motor rotor accelerates and reaches the nominal speed, the current I decreases, the current transformer magnetic circuit does not saturate, the voltage on the secondary winding U becomes sinusoidal, and its amplitude is insufficient to trigger the triac. The starting winding is switched off.

The experiments have shown that for the manufacture of a current transformer, it is possible to choose a magnetic core of any type from electrical steel with a cross-sectional area of only 510 mm2. In this case, the primary winding is carried out with PEL-0,7 wire and contains 5-7 turns, and the secondary winding - 80 ... 100 turns of PEL-0,1 wire. Triacs KU208G, TS106-4 or two counter-parallel thyristors KU202L,M are used in the manufactured and tested samples of the trigger device. In the latter case, the transformer has two identical secondary windings.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

TCL NXTWEAR S Augmented Reality Smart Glasses 11.06.2023

TCL has launched new smart glasses that use augmented and augmented reality to provide an additional portable display for PCs, game consoles and other devices.

The main advantage of TCL NXTWEAR S is their dual Micro-OLED display, which can project a virtual 130-inch 1080p screen in front of the user, which looks like it is four meters away from it with a 45-degree field of view. Using USB-C, the Virtual Display can stream video from a PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PC, tablet, or (most likely) an Android phone. It can also display 3D content upscaled to 3,840x1,080. The screen has a contrast ratio of over 100000:1 and supports 108 percent sRGB color gamut.

The goggles weigh 85g and the USB cable adds another 30g. They have interchangeable front lenses for different sunlight conditions, adjustable nose pads and magnetic lenses for myopic users.

Google famously tried to popularize smart glasses a decade ago with the $1500 Google Glass, but privacy concerns over the built-in camera kept them out of the market. The company tried again with a $1000 enterprise-focused version, but stopped selling them in March, promising to support current owners until September.

These issues haven't stopped other companies from entering the smartglass market with cheaper consumer-grade models. Over the past few years, Meta, Razer, Amazon, Xiaomi and others have released smart glasses ranging from $200 to $400, mainly to bring features from other devices into the user's field of vision.
