In the device brought to the attention of readers, a DS1821 temperature sensor from Dallas Semiconductor is used. This is a microprocessor-based device that does not require calibration and outputs the temperature value as a byte in serial code over a 1-Wire interface (single-wire, bi-directional interface). The use of the PIC controller made it possible to create an extremely simple digital device for measuring temperature in the range from -1 to + 55°С with an error of ±125°С.

The schematic diagram of the device is shown in fig. 1. It allows you to measure the temperature of two sensors (DD1, DD2), one of which can be placed, for example, on the street, and the other in the living room. The microprocessor DD3 provides interaction with the sensors and transmits to the LCD module HG1 the temperature value received from them via a four-wire bus. LCD module AC161B is a matrix Russified single-line LCD indicator for 16 familiarity with a built-in controller and backlight (the letters A and K indicate the outputs of the anodes and cathodes of the LCD backlight LEDs). Resistor R4 limits the anode voltage to 4 V at 70 mA.

Chip DA1 stabilizes the supply voltage of the device. Resistor R1 protects it from a short circuit that may occur in the communication lines with the sensors.

The program that controls the operation of the microcontroller is written in MPASM assembler from Microchip. It uses standard software modules from Microchip (PIC), Dallas Semiconductor (DS1821), Ampire (AC161B indicator). Codes "firmware" microcontroller ROM in HEX-format are shown in the table.

A properly assembled device does not need to be adjusted. The only thing that needs to be done is to set the desired contrast with the trimmer resistor R6.

The thermometer is mounted on a breadboard and placed in a plastic housing (Fig. 2).

Detachable connectors X1 (1) and X2 (2) are small-sized coaxial (they are equipped with small-sized stereo phones). The number 3 indicates the power wires. If the sensor intended for measuring the temperature in the living room is supposed to be placed in the same place as the main unit, it can be mounted directly on the pins of the plug. It is not recommended to place the sensor inside the device case, since even a slight heating by the heat generated by the resistor R4 will unacceptably distort the readings.

For power supply, you can use any AC adapter with an output voltage of 6 ... 12 V. If this voltage is less than 12 V, you must select resistor R4 according to the current recommended for backlighting the indicator (70 mA).

The external sensor is placed in a glass drug ampoule with the narrowed part removed. The exit point of the cable from the ampoule is sealed with any of the commercially available sealants.

Instead of the PIC16F84 microprocessor, you can use PIC16C84, instead of the AC161B indicator - AC082 (two-line with eight characters per line) or similar from other manufacturers. We can replace the 78L05 microcircuit voltage regulator with any other with a stabilization voltage of 5 V. In extreme cases, you can use the simplest parametric stabilizer on the KS156A zener diode by choosing a ballast resistor.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

High-capacity Industrial Slim SATA SSDs from Virtium 10.02.2013

Networking and industrial embedded systems are the main applications for Virtium's StorFly 200 SSDs. According to the manufacturer, Virtium StorFly is the most capacious industrial SSD in Slim SATA (MO-297) size. The volume of drives reaches 512 GB. However, they take up only 15% of the space required by 2,5-inch drives, since their dimensions are 54 x 39 x 4 mm.

The manufacturer offers drives in four classes: CE, RE, XE and PE. The former uses consumer-grade MLC NAND flash, which accounts for the claimed 36TB total write capacity (hereinafter, the figure is based on a 256GB SSD). The RE drives use industrial-grade MLC NAND flash for extended lifespan up to 90TB. Even more, 700TB is the maximum write capacity of the XE drives, which use "long life" industrial-grade MLC NAND flash. Finally, PE drives use SLC NAND flash. These drives can handle 1825TB of writes.

CE drives are available in 32-512 GB, RE - 16-512 GB, XE and PE - 8-256 GB. In terms of performance, all SSDs exhibit sequential read speeds up to 250MB/s. Drives of the first three classes can write data at speeds up to 190 MB / s, the fourth - up to 200 MB / s. Performance on read operations is 12000-15000 IOPS, on write operations - 2000 IOPS.

Miniature drives are available in two modifications, designed for operation in the temperature range from 0 to 70 °C and from -40 °C to +85 °C.
