In many cases, two LEDs are enough to illuminate a staircase or entrance. On fig. 1 shows a diagram of their connection to a 220 V network. LEDs EL1, EL2 can be of any type, including increased brightness. With the indicated resistor values, the average current through each of them is about 5 mA. It is important that the LEDs are connected in opposite polarity and each of them, working in the half-cycle of the mains voltage of "its" polarity, serves as a reverse voltage limiter for the other. If you mistakenly turn on the LEDs in the same polarity, the full reverse mains voltage will be applied to them and both of them will fail.

Details, with the exception of the resistor R1, are mounted on a round fiberglass board with a diameter of 28 mm. Three slots are made with a file on the periphery of the board, designed for L-shaped brackets made of tinplate, soldered to the upper edge of the E27 base from a burned-out incandescent lamp. With these brackets, the board is subsequently attached to the base.

From the hole in the central contact of the base, the remainder of the output of the burnt lamp and solder are removed. One of the terminals of the resistor R1 is passed into this hole, the other is connected to the resistor R2 on the board. After attaching the board with mounted parts to the base, the protruding terminal of the resistor R1 is cut off, and its remaining part is soldered to the central contact.

The finished LED lamp is shown in fig. 2. The picture also shows two long screws that help screw it into a standard electric chuck.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Privateers gathered on the moon 01.01.2010

The company "Google" has announced a competition: a non-governmental organization, the first to be able to throw a lunar rover on the moon, which will pass 500 meters, will receive a prize - $ 30 million. The offer is valid until December 31, 2014.

The private Romanian Association of Cosmonautics and Aeronautics (ARCA) intends to participate in the lunar race. A three-stage rocket has already been created, which starts from a height of 14 kilometers. There it will be lifted by a stratostat with a volume of two million cubic meters. Since at this altitude most of the atmosphere will be left behind, the rocket may not have a strictly aerodynamic shape.

The flight is scheduled for 2011. One group from Russia also participates in the competition.

With the declared current through the LEDs of 5mA, the circuit is suitable only for lighting the switch, and not for the staircase. About the design: it is easier and more aesthetic to use a cartridge with a "skirt" from a faulty energy-saving device.
