It is known that most of the Russian fleet is equipped with simple contact ignition systems based on the principle of interrupting the current flowing through the low-voltage winding of a high-voltage transformer, which is the ignition coil, using a mechanical interrupter, which is a contact switch driven by the ignition distributor shaft.

Such a system has a lot of disadvantages, the current flowing through the primary winding of the ignition coil is too high, and as a result, sparking occurs in the interrupter, which inevitably leads to burning and melting of its contacts, plus, electrochemical erosion of these contacts is added in winter or autumn-spring time. But that's not all, the duration of the spark discharge, as a result of the high current flowing through the contacts of the interrupter, it turns out to be small, 0,3-0,8 mS, and as a result, poor-quality ignition of the combustible mixture, a more enriched mixture is required, poor engine response at low speeds , increased fuel consumption. All these shortcomings have been known for a long time, and since the appearance of high-power high-voltage transistors, the automotive industry is gradually moving to the complete set of new cars with contactless electronic ignition systems, which use a contactless ignition sensor, an electronic switch with a powerful high-voltage transistor at the output, as well as a more powerful ignition coil. with low resistance windings.

You can improve the performance of a car with a contact ignition system by installing a contactless system from a newer modification of this brand. But this method is relatively expensive - a complete replacement of all elements of the ignition system is required, including a distribution sensor, an ignition coil, as well as the purchase of an appropriate electronic switch. In addition, not every model of the old model can be matched with suitable elements from newer models. Nevertheless, it is possible to significantly improve the ignition quality of a simple contact system if a simple transistor switch is connected between the contact current breaker and the standard ignition coil, the output stage of which is made on a high-voltage powerful transistor. In this case, the gain, in comparison with a simple system, will be in several positions:

firstly, the current through the interrupter contacts will decrease and they will no longer burn and correlate, secondly, the duration of the spark discharge will approximately double, which will lead to improved ignition of the mixture, thirdly, in the event of a failure of the transistor switch, it will be possible to simply rearrange the wire to return the system to its original version.

The schematic diagram of the switch is shown in the figure. In practice, this is a simplified version of the switch "131.3734" from the contactless ignition system of the Volga car.

Simple ignition switch

When the contacts of the breaker are closed, a negative voltage is supplied to the base of the transistor VT1 relative to the emitter and this transistor opens. Its opening leads to the fact that through this transistor and R4 a positive voltage is supplied to the base of the powerful transistor VT2, and it opens. The current through it is supplied to the primary winding of the ignition coil L1. When the contacts of the breaker open, the voltage supply to the VT1 base stops and it closes, and VT2 closes after it. In the coil, in the circuit consisting of the primary winding L1 and the capacitor C2, oscillations occur that induce a high voltage pulse in the secondary winding L1. This high-voltage pulse through the distributor enters the candle and a spark discharge occurs. The duration of a spark in air, from the beginning of the capacitive to the end of its inductive phase, is about 2 mS, which is more than twice the duration of a spark of a classical ignition system.

Resistor R1 is not needed at first glance, but as practice shows, when too low current is passed through the breaker contacts, a reliable electrical contact does not always occur, and misfires in the ignition system are possible. To avoid this, a resistor R1 is introduced, which creates the necessary minimum current through these contacts.

The KT973A transistor can be replaced with KT816, and the KT8109A transistor with KT848A.

The switch is assembled by volumetric installation in the case of a faulty switch from the contactless ignition system of Volga or UAZ cars.

The setting consists in selecting the value of R4 (at least 22 O) and R2 (at least 300 O) so that when the ignition coil is connected and the breaker contacts are closed, the voltage on the VT2 collector is minimal (no more than 1,5 V). In this case, the current through the coil will be maximum.

Subjectively, with this switch, the car moves better at low revs, starts off better at idle.

You can increase the spark energy if you install an ignition coil with low-resistance windings from a VAZ-08-099 car, but you will need to refrain from turning the ignition on for a long time with the engine off, since the current through the coil will be high and this can damage the output transistor of the switch.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

New Science - Forensic Seismology 15.08.2002

More than forty years ago, the nuclear powers began to create networks of seismic stations to monitor enemy nuclear tests. Now these networks, which have evolved significantly and increased their sensitivity, are largely out of work.

At the annual conference of the American Geophysical Union, held in April of this year, representatives of a new science - forensic seismology spoke. Recordings of supersensitive seismographs, it turns out, can contribute to the investigation of various incidents and crimes.

So, Terry Wallace, a seismologist from the University of Arizona, collected seismograms of such incidents as explosions of oil and gas pipelines, plane and train crashes - about 400 records in total. Having analyzed them, Wallace can now, for example, determine from the seismogram of a plane crash whether it hit the ground still intact or exploded in the air.

Another geophysicist finds secretly dug underground tunnels by reflecting seismic waves. So it was possible to identify the tunnels made by smugglers under the US-Mexico border at a depth of 10-20 meters (drugs and illegal immigrants were delivered through these passages).

Cheap and cheerful, I'll try to make it right now.

And if you use KT898, the result will be even better. And the B118 ignition coil is generally ideal. Thank you.

Alexander
Thank you, of course, for the diagram, but I didn’t get an answer to my question: CAN I USE COM.131.3734-11 IN KTSZ? If you can call me, I will be very grateful.

Alexander
SWITCH ASSEMBLED ACCORDING TO THE PROPOSED SCHEME: NO-RA-BO-TA-ET. If you don't mind contacting me or text me your phone, I'll call you myself, 89185869701.

Alexander
In this form, the circuit will not work even theoretically, but I decided to check it in practice and turned out to be right, perhaps the mistake was made unintentionally, I don’t know, but the fact remains - IT DOES NOT WORK!

Alexander
I want to apologize to the author of the scheme. I myself made a mistake, or rather the part turned out to be defective. The circuit works, but the spark is unstable and the spark gap is a maximum of 4 mm. Question - how to increase the spark gap and stabilize the spark?

Alexander
WHEN THE CONTACTS ARE CLOSED, A CONSTANT SPARK DISCHARGE IMMEDIATELY APPEARS AND DOES NOT STOP UNTIL THE CONTACTS OPEN! WHAT TO DO, WHO HAS AN IDEAS?

Alexander
Has anyone made this schematic? if so, then the question is: WHY DOES THIS SWITCH GIVE OUT A CONTINUOUS SPARK DISCHARGE WHEN THE CONTACTS CLOSED. OW ... RESPOND SOMEONE! ...

Alexander
There is at least someone adequate on the network (since the author of the article was encrypted) to answer: WHAT EXACTLY IS NOT ENOUGH IN THE SCHEME FOR IT TO WORK? I will be very grateful!

Oleg
The circuit lacks a zener diode to limit the saturation current of the transistor)))
