In addition to the direct use of solar heat, in regions with high levels of solar radiation, it can be used to generate steam, which turns a turbine and generates electricity. The production of solar thermal electricity on a large scale is quite competitive. The industrial application of this technology dates back to the 1980s; since then, the industry has developed rapidly. More than 400 megawatts of solar thermal power plants have already been installed by US utilities, providing electricity to 350 people and displacing the equivalent of 000 million barrels of oil per year.

Nine power plants located in the Mojave Desert (in the US state of California) have 354 MW of installed capacity and have accumulated 100 years of industrial operation experience. This technology is so advanced that, according to official information, it can compete with traditional electricity generation technologies in many parts of the United States. In other regions of the world, projects to use solar heat to generate electricity should also be launched soon.

India, Egypt, Morocco and Mexico are developing corresponding programs, grants for their financing are provided by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). In Greece, Spain and the US, new projects are being developed by independent electricity producers.

According to the method of heat production, solar thermal power plants are divided into solar concentrators (mirrors) и solar ponds.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Super Sub Electric Submarine 28.11.2022

U-BoatWorx has unveiled the Super Sub electric submarine, designed for three people. Next year, engineers are protesting it in real conditions.

The device has four engines with a capacity of 60 kW. Its acrylic body is equipped with a long tail and wings. The boat can accommodate two passengers and a captain. According to the manufacturer, the device can sail 7 knots (12,95 km / h) faster than other submarines.

The submersible is powered by lightweight lithium-ion batteries that can provide 9000 kg of thrust if required. The submarine, as a result, was able to develop a maximum speed of 8 knots (14,8 km / h).

To improve the design of the electric Super Sub, engineers at U-Boat Worx turned to colleagues at the Dutch marine research institute MARIN, who specialize in computational flow dynamics.

After the body was finalized and it passed the appropriate tests, during which they achieved optimal flow dynamics, it turned out that the Super Sub was not inferior in its efficiency to any modern electric vehicle.

The maximum speed of the submersible has also improved significantly from 8 to 10 knots, according to U-Boat Worx.

Rise and immersion are made at an angle of 30 degrees. The maximum diving depth is 300 m. Super Sub will allow its passengers to swim with bottlenose dolphins and many other sea creatures.
