The use of electricity from the wind is economically beneficial at average annual wind speeds of more than 5 m/s, or in the absence or irregular supply of mains electricity.

There are both domestic and foreign manufacturers of wind turbines on the market.

You should not get carried away looking for wind turbines that start working at low wind speeds - up to 3 m / s, since at these wind speeds its energy is negligible.

When the wind generator is operating in rain or snow, the output power is reduced by 10 - 30%.

Particular attention should be paid not only to the power of the wind generator, but also at what wind speed this power can be obtained. Some sellers provide inflated figures. To do this, do not be too lazy to calculate, using a simple formula, the power that a windmill with a propeller of a specific diameter is capable of delivering. This power practically depends only on the wind speed V and the propeller diameter D, and all other factors - the number of blades, their weight, area, profile, twist, generator, bearings, etc. - minor and big errors do not give. A simplified formula for calculating the power actually given off by the wind, depending on the wind speed and the diameter of the propeller:

P = D2V3 / 7000, kW, with an accuracy of ± 20% (depends on the efficiency of the propeller and generator).

With equal power of the wind generator, choose the one with the larger diameter of the wind wheel. When choosing a wind generator, it must be borne in mind that the most cost-effective power output under the wind conditions of your area can be obtained at twice the average annual wind speed, which can be called nominal. For the Moscow region, Vav. year = 4 m/s, a Vnom = 8 m/s. For a wind turbine with a propeller diameter of 5 m, P = 52 - (4x2) 3 / 7000 = 1,83 kW. Thus, the rated power of the wind generator will not exceed 2 kW with a propeller diameter of 5 m, and more powerful wind turbines with the same propeller diameter will not give practically any gain, but their price will be higher. For vcp. year = 5,5 m / s (in coastal and steppe regions), Vnom = 11 m / s, the rated power will be P = 52 (5,5x2) 3 / 7000 = 4,75 kW, which corresponds to a wind turbine with a rated power 5 kW and a screw with a diameter of 5 m.

When comparing prices from different manufacturers, be sure to consider the composition of the equipment sold to you and its functionality. The wind generator is a whole complex, which necessarily includes:

  • wind power unit - generator, blades, attachment point to the mast; in addition, this may include a propeller speed controller (centrifugal, mechanical) and a wind orientation device (tail or windrose);
  • the mast can be either special or constructed from a water pipe or pole. Here you can save money, as a special mast is quite expensive.
  • If you need to store electricity in case of calm, you will have to acquire the following equipment:
  • rechargeable batteries (car);
  • power processing unit and battery charging unit (SEZA Unit);
  • voltage converter (inverter) - 220V/50Hz.

The cost of such a configuration of a wind generator starts from 100 thousand rubles. for 1 kW.

A temporary calm will help to survive the battery station, which stores electricity during strong winds. But if the wind is weak for a long time, and at that time you consume electricity as usual, then sooner or later the battery will be discharged. In areas with a low average annual wind speed - up to 5 m / s, for complete autonomy of power supply, I recommend additionally installing a 2 kW gas-powered unit that will charge the batteries during a calm period

It is economically feasible to use a wind generator for heating a house only if the average annual wind speed is more than 5-6 m/s.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Major risk factor for gambling addiction 07.05.2024

Computer games are becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment among teenagers, but the associated risk of gaming addiction remains a significant problem. American scientists conducted a study to determine the main factors contributing to this addiction and offer recommendations for its prevention. Over the course of six years, 385 teenagers were followed to find out what factors may predispose them to gambling addiction. The results showed that 90% of study participants were not at risk of addiction, while 10% became gambling addicts. It turned out that the key factor in the onset of gambling addiction is a low level of prosocial behavior. Teenagers with a low level of prosocial behavior do not show interest in the help and support of others, which can lead to a loss of contact with the real world and a deepening dependence on virtual reality offered by computer games. Based on these results, scientists ... >>

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

Found a way to increase the efficiency of solar power plants 11.07.2022

Scientists from Stanford University in the USA have developed a cheap lens for solar panels that can collect up to 90% of the light and increase its brightness by 3 times. Passive Axially Graded Index Lenses (AGILE) photocell technology can help reduce the footprint of solar power plants.

Solar energy will play an important role in meeting sustainable future energy needs. The technology could help install solar panels in small areas where it was not possible before.

AGILE does not require solar tracking and respects the maximum limit of the cosine projection by concentrating light falling on it from all angles.

With AGILE, pointless concentration systems (i.e. without having to follow the Sun) can be used, which reduces the amount of photovoltaic material and also effectively absorbs stray light. After all, the scattering of light due to cloud cover and the atmosphere can reach 20% even on a sunny day.

The AGILE concept The AGILE concentrator matrix system consists of a repeating block that absorbs all incident light and therefore appears dark. This graded index immersion optics can also be applied in areas such as light control in solid state lighting, laser connectors, display technology, etc.

The scientists used strong, broadband transparent and inexpensive sorted materials for two AGILE prototypes: a glass pyramid made by stacking different glass plates and an overlapping polymer array of cones.
