Blackening (the so-called niello) is a widespread and almost the only practical way of coloring the surface of silver or silver-plated things, and not the entire surface of the thing is painted black, but only some of its parts in the form of various figures, patterns, arabesques, etc. This kind of decoration of silver items with niello has been known to us for a very long time: Tula silver snuff boxes and cigarette cases, Caucasian belts and daggers "under niello".

The blackening process consists in the formation or deposition of silver sulfide on the surface of a silver thing.

In a handicraft way, blackening is done chemically: deep patterns engraved on the surface of a thing are filled with a fusible composition, including silver sulfide, then the thing is exposed to a high temperature sufficient to fuse the composition with silver. That is, there is a partial coating of the surface of the thing with "black enamel", the composition of which is different for different handicraftsmen.

Here is one of the good recipes black enamel: 38 parts of silver, 72 parts of copper, 50 parts of lead, 384 parts of sulfur and 36 parts of borax are alloyed in a crucible, and the metals included in the composition turn into sulfur. After cooling, the alloy is crushed into a fine powder and carefully sieved. When used, the engraved places are sprinkled with enamel powder and the thing is kept on fire until the melted enamel fills the recesses again. After cooling, the excess enamel is washed off, the thing is ground and polished.

In large-scale industries, niello is induced mostly by galvanic means.

Sometimes silver or silver-plated things (vases, candelabra, figures) are blackened with graphite. To do this, they are lubricated with a mushy mixture of 6 parts of powdered graphite and bloodstone in powder with turpentine (bloodstone, or crocus, is native iron oxide). When the lubricant dries, the thing is wiped with a soft brush and suede, then its convex places, to give them more shine, are polished with a cloth moistened with alcohol or vodka. Such underlining is purely mechanical and is due to the same conditions that pollution of any metal surface produces over time, i.e. adhesion of dust particles (in this case, graphite plays the role of dust) to surface irregularities and roughness. Therefore, the less smooth the surface, the more successful its underlining by this mechanical method.

Such blackening, of course, is not as strong as chemical.

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

The threat of space debris to the Earth's magnetic field 01.05.2024

More and more often we hear about an increase in the amount of space debris surrounding our planet. However, it is not only active satellites and spacecraft that contribute to this problem, but also debris from old missions. The growing number of satellites launched by companies like SpaceX creates not only opportunities for the development of the Internet, but also serious threats to space security. Experts are now turning their attention to the potential implications for the Earth's magnetic field. Dr. Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics emphasizes that companies are rapidly deploying satellite constellations, and the number of satellites could grow to 100 in the next decade. The rapid development of these cosmic armadas of satellites can lead to contamination of the Earth's plasma environment with dangerous debris and a threat to the stability of the magnetosphere. Metal debris from used rockets can disrupt the ionosphere and magnetosphere. Both of these systems play a key role in protecting the atmosphere and maintaining ... >>

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

The traffic light will help the car 30.03.2014

The Audi Group, part of the German automaker Volkswagen, has developed an intelligent system that informs motorists about the work of traffic lights in the city. An electronic assistant called Audi Traffic Light Recognition is able to reduce the number of traffic jams, as well as reduce fuel consumption and emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere.

According to the idea of the Ingolstadt developers, data on traffic signals on the way of the car will be displayed on the dashboard. There, the driver will also be able to see a hint with the optimal speed, which must be selected in order to pass the nearest intersection on a green light. To do this, car electronics will be connected to the city's traffic light control center via the Internet.

If the vehicle stops at a red light, the driver will see a countdown timer in front of him, showing the time until the green light turns on. At the same time, the technology will be able to work in tandem with the Start / Stop system, which turns off the engine during downtime and starts it again when the driver presses the gas pedal. In the case of Audi Traffic Light Recognition, the engine will start five seconds before the traffic light turns on.

Audi claims that by teaching cars to interact with traffic lights, it will be possible to reduce the level of harmful emissions by 15%. The introduction of the development in the territory of Germany alone will save about 900 million liters of fuel. In addition, the project will help optimize car traffic by reducing the number of traffic congestion.

The traffic light recognition system is being tested in several cities, including Verona, Berlin and Las Vegas. According to the automaker, the new product is ready for mass production and can be installed in all new Audi models, but first it is necessary to obtain permission from the authorities to implement the project.
