FUNDAMENTALS OF FIRST AID
Mumps, or mumps. Medical care for a child Directory / Fundamentals of First Aid Mumps, or mumps is an acute infectious disease that mainly affects children from 3 to 7 years. Most often it begins with inflammation of the parotid salivary glands. The mumps virus can cause inflammation of other organs - most commonly the pancreas (pancreatitis) and testicles in boys, and the ovaries in girls. Parotitis affecting the testicles is dangerous for male infertility. Meningitis (inflammation of the brain) can be a complication of mumps. After the illness, a strong immunity to the mumps virus develops, and the child becomes immune to this disease in the future. The first symptoms of the disease An increase in temperature to 38-38,5 ° C, sometimes up to 40 ° C. Headache, malaise, lethargy, sometimes vomiting occurs. Dryness in the mouth. There is pain in the ear area, which increases during chewing, then swelling appears under the earlobe, which quickly increases in size, while the skin color does not change, and the skin temperature in this place does not increase. Swelling can also appear in the testicles, first on one side, and after 1-2 days on the other. The testicle increases in size, the skin of the scrotum swells, reddens, shines. The glandular tissue acquires a test-like density and becomes extremely painful. Usually, the inflammatory process begins in both testicles in turn with an interval of 2-3 days (less often it happens simultaneously, even less often only one testicle is affected). At the same time, the temperature rises and the general condition worsens. There are obvious signs of intoxication. When emergency care is needed When signs of complications of parotitis appear: pancreatitis or meningitis. Signs of pancreatitis may appear 4-7 days after the onset of the disease: high fever, deterioration in general condition, abdominal pain, especially around the navel, as well as nausea, vomiting, loose stools, and sometimes constipation. Signs of meningitis appear most often immediately after inflammation of the salivary glands on the 5-7th day from the onset of the disease: chills, fever up to 39 ° C and above, constant severe headache, vomiting, neck muscle tension. When to contact your local doctor With the appearance of swelling near the ears and the occurrence of pain. With an increase in temperature and intoxication. What to do before the doctor arrives 1. Isolate the child in a separate room, put to bed. 2. Ventilate the room as often as possible. 3. Daily wet cleaning with disinfectants, such as 1-2% chloramine solution. It is even better to make the room ultraviolet irradiation to disinfect objects and air. 4. Boil the child's dishes and linen - under the influence of high temperature, the mumps virus dies in 10 minutes. Wipe toys with disinfectants. 5. At high temperature (above 38,5°C), use painkillers and antipyretics. 6. If the body temperature does not exceed 38 ° C, put compresses on the salivary glands, alternating half-alcohol (alcohol diluted twice for older children or three times for babies) and oil. Between compresses, take breaks for 20-30 minutes. For an oil compress, camphor oil or, in extreme cases, boiled vegetable oil is used. HOW TO PUT A COMPRESS Cover the swollen glands first with gauze soaked in oil or an alcohol solution, then with parchment paper or plastic wrap, with a layer of dry cotton and lightly bandage all this around the head with a bandage so as to fix it on the inflamed places for 2-3 hours. 7. If the baby has a temperature above 38 ° C, then compresses are contraindicated. Then tie the baby's neck with a woolen scarf. 8. Take care of a special menu. When the salivary glands are affected, it is painful for the child to chew and swallow. Therefore, feed him semi-liquid or pureed food, boiled or steamed. The diet should be dairy-vegetarian. Eliminate spicy and sour foods from your child's diet. 9. With inflammation of the salivary glands, the child feels severe dryness in the mouth, so drink it more often with boiled water at room temperature, decoctions of berries, fruits, vegetables, and chilled tea. Rinse your mouth with a baking soda solution. 10. For swelling and pain in the testicles, give your child a pain reliever. To relieve pain, lift the testicles with a wide bandage, fasten it to a linen belt (like a hammock). Apply a heating pad with cold water (but not ice!) or a regular bottle filled with cold water to the testicles. Heat is contraindicated! 12. If there are symptoms of meningitis, before the arrival of an ambulance, give the child a diuretic, since inflammation of the meninges is accompanied by severe swelling. If there is no such medicine at home, give a painkiller to reduce the headache. Author: Basharova N.A.
