Panasonic GD75. Mobile phone review Review A distinctive feature of this device is the built-in antenna, which was first used in Panasonic phones. Simultaneously with the GD75, the GD76 model was announced, differing from it only in supporting packet data transfer (GPRS 3+1). The Panasonic GD75 has two quite interesting body color options - silver and metallic black. In the second case, the phone has a silver edging around the screen, the joystick and rocker keys are the same color. All other keys are made to match the color of the case - they are black. The phone's dimensions are small - only 106x44x21 mm and weighing 82 grams. The device has a streamlined shape and fits well in the hand. The keys are made of plastic and are slightly recessed into the body; They are located quite closely, which creates some discomfort. The convenient four-way navigation key (joystick) is identical to that used in the Panasonic GD95 model. Interestingly, the call and end keys are combined with the phone book access key and the soft key, respectively - that is, these are swing keys; There are no difficulties when working with them. The soft green backlighting of the keys contrasts with the blue backlight of the screen. The markings on the keys are clearly visible in different lighting conditions, but the numbers themselves are printed somewhat sloppily: they practically merge with the edges of the keys. The font of the letters has changed, becoming more strict. By the way, what struck me about the GD92 model was the keyboard, or rather the unusual font, which noticeably enlivened the appearance of the device. As for the GD75, what attracts attention in this phone is the blue-backlit screen, which can accommodate up to 5 lines of text of 16 characters each and one service line. The screen contrast is adjustable, and in general, I must say, the display is quite good: the information on it is easy to read both in bright light and at dusk. Continuing the conversation about the design of the device, it is worth noting the service indicator located in the upper right corner of the front panel. If in previous models the indicator blinked annoyingly in standby mode, now it turns on only during charging (constantly lights up in red) or when there is an incoming call (flashes alternately in red and orange). On the left side surface there is a connector for a telephone headset, covered with a rubber plug - a simple and reliable design. On the right side there is only one hole for the strap. Looking at the back of the phone, you will see a small protrusion created to optimize the performance of the speakerphone: if it was tightly fixed to the surface, the sound from the speaker located here would be very quiet. Nearby, behind a rubber plug, there is a connector for an external antenna. Interestingly, in this model the back cover covering the battery compartment is secured with a retractable holder (which also secures the battery). Due to the design features, the lid has no play at all and is very securely fastened. This model comes standard with a 650 mAh lithium-ion battery, which, according to the manufacturer, can provide up to 180 hours of phone operation in standby mode and up to 6 hours of talk time. In Moscow networks (MTS, Beeline), the device worked for about 3 days (25, 31 and 27 minutes of calls, respectively) using an alarm clock and reminders (4 events in total). According to user reviews, even with a shorter talk time (up to 20 minutes), the phone functions for about 3 days, perhaps a little more, but does not reach 4. The time to fully charge the battery is about one and a half hours. The battery charge level indicator has three divisions, and the algorithm for calculating the remaining capacity is similar to that used in the GD95. If half an hour after you start charging, you stop this process and look at the indicator, you will see that the phone is fully charged - you should definitely remember this. Menu In standby mode, the screen displays the name of the cellular operator, signal strength (4 bars), battery level (3 bars), time and date, and the screen saver (if installed). By pressing the joystick, you will see 9 animated main menu icons. The picture with the symbol of the activated item is noticeably larger than other icons. Opening the menu, we find ourselves in the sub-item wap browser (1.2.1): apparently, the developers considered this function the most used. I will say right away that this model almost completely embodies the ideology that we first encountered in the Panasonic GD95: the same type of menu, the same breakdown of functions into submenus. Menu items are numbered, allowing for quick navigation. Unfortunately, the keyboard locking in this model is not implemented in the best way: you have to enter the menu, then move the joystick to the left and press it twice to confirm the lock. It can be removed much easier - with two clicks on the joystick. In general, you quickly get used to this arrangement of keyboard locking, and it no longer seems complicated. An undoubted advantage is that when there is an incoming call, the keypad lock is automatically removed and restored when the call ends. Let's look at the main menu items and their corresponding functions. Let me just remind you that, as in the GD95, pressing the joystick in one item or another brings up a pop-up submenu that gives access to various actions. Notebook This is a regular phone book that allows you to save up to 200 entries in the device’s memory (SIM card memory is also available), as well as simultaneously view entries from both the phone’s memory and the SIM card’s memory. The list can be sorted by name or location (the second type of sorting is extremely rarely useful). Lists are called up in standby mode by pressing the corresponding key. For one name, only one number can be recorded in the phone’s memory, while the device supports 9 groups of subscribers, each of which has its own designation (by default, these are numbers from 1 to 9), the ability to assign a personal signal tone and a splash screen that appears on the screen when incoming call. An unpleasant surprise may await you here: when a call comes in, some screensavers change so quickly on the screen to the name or number of the caller that you do not have time to see the last one. I recommend testing the operation of the screensaver first, since this opportunity is provided by the device itself. All of the above functions: personal tone or ringtone, screen saver - are also assigned to individual numbers. Everything works properly. GD75 supports speed dialing, to activate which you will need to select the source - phone memory or SIM card. It is possible to use voice dialing. However, you should remember that tags (up to 5 in total) are recorded only in the Personal Settings menu - this cannot be done in the phone book. The device does not track identical tags and allows you to record them, which is undoubtedly a drawback. There is no sound when recording marks, or rather voice prompts. And one more interesting detail: the phone has a pre-installed Russian T9 dictionary, which in theory allows you to enter short messages in Russian, as well as use Russian characters in the phone book. In practice, it turns out that typing in Russian is only possible in T9 mode - manual input is available only for English and Greek. In this regard, the attractiveness of the Russian T9 dictionary seems very doubtful: using it, it will be very difficult to enter names into the phone book, since they are not in the dictionary. Messages. This menu allows you to read and write short messages stored in the SIM card memory, which today usually has a capacity of 10 SMS. The phone perfectly reads messages in Russian, moreover, it supports connected SMS (up to 3). The phone has an SMS chat function, which allows for mass sending of messages to several addresses simultaneously. Using short messages, you can receive new tones or ringing melodies (including polyphonic ones), as well as screen savers. There is no email support on this device. Personal settings As already mentioned, voice dialing marks are recorded and stored in this item, and here you can select the menu language and ring tone (from the 6 tones and 14 melodies available in the phone). By the way, there is an additional possibility of recording two melodies from the microphone (by default, one of them is “cuckoo”), there is also room for one melody, which the user can dial himself if desired. In addition, the GD75 allows you to replace 4 preset melodies (from 16 to 20) with new ones downloaded from the network using short messages. Polyphonic melodies sound very pleasant; Panasonic phones can be easily distinguished from other devices precisely thanks to their melodies. In this case, naturally, shrill-sounding tones are distinguishable better than melodies. In the same menu, you can set the sound volume and tone (out of four possible) buttons. The GD75 has a separate setting - Whisper Mode, which allows you to set the ringer volume, as well as the type of vibration (discrete or continuous). Once you set this mode up, you can then press and hold the # key in standby mode to activate it - a very convenient idea. Previously, pressing this key would turn on the vibration alert and turn off all sounds - in the new model it became possible to make minimal settings “for yourself”. In general, Panasonic phones have always lacked user profiles, this feature is the first step towards their implementation. Screen-related functions deserve special mention. It is possible to choose one of 13 screensavers, some of which are animated (the first two screensavers are digital and analogue clocks displaying the current time); or the animation that appears when the device is turned on (two themes in total). You can create a welcome message. The user sets the mode (enable, disable), as well as the operating time of the screen backlight (10, 30 or 60 seconds). Applications This item gives access to two games - Racing and Balls (although there is a separate item for them in the main menu). Games are not interesting, but sometimes they help kill time. In the same submenu you can play back a voice recording (up to 15 seconds long). It should be noted that changing the SIM card leads to the destruction of the voice recording. Traditionally for phones of this brand, the voice recorder records both participants in the conversation. The calculator is quite unusual: mathematical functions are correlated with the sides of the joystick, pressing corresponds to the equal sign or canceling the input. A very successful implementation - the calculator is really convenient to use. A currency converter is provided. Phone menu It contains functions such as network selection, call duration and cost, call forwarding, as well as some others. Diary Let me quote an excerpt from the description of the GD75. The organizer in this model is very advanced, and its biggest drawback is the inability to synchronize data with a PC.
Impressions It is worth saying a few words about the pleasant polyphonic call, the operation of which is ensured by a separate speaker, also designed to implement the speakerphone function. The phone incorporates the best developments from Panasonic, while its sensitivity and call quality, including hands-free calls, in my opinion, are quite comparable to those of the GD95 model - that is, the device, at least in this respect, was a success. The ringer volume is not always enough (polyphonic melodies have not only advantages, but also disadvantages). One of the possible solutions is to set the ringtone as a ringtone rather than a melody. The vibration alert, configured for continuous or discrete operation, feels relatively good. The phone is so small in size and weight that you can easily carry it either in a shirt or in a jeans pocket. The disadvantages of the device include resetting the date and time when replacing the SIM card or battery. The advantages of the fashion model GD75, which, by the way, are also typical for other phones from Panasonic, are polyphonic ringing, speakerphone, the ability to record ringtones from the microphone, create your own melody, etc. Changes compared to the older model include the absence of an e-mail client, shorter operating time of the voice recorder (15 seconds versus 30) and support for only one screen backlight color.
