MOTOROLA V60. Mobile phone overview
Review
The fate of this model is interesting: at first, Motorola v60c, supplied to the markets of America and Asia, was a CDMA phone, the GSM modification appeared much later and immediately at the time of release (early 2001) attracted everyone's attention, since, in fact, was the first industrially produced model with two displays. Following it, other companies began to produce such devices in series. v60 is a clamshell and therefore belongs to the class of fashion phones. It differs from its predecessors by the presence of a second display and a body made of anodized aluminum. In addition to two standard GSM bands (900 and 1800), v60 also supports a third one (1900), which theoretically makes this device interesting for roaming in the US. Thanks to the aluminum case, the phone weighs as much as 109 grams, which is uncharacteristic for devices of this class, however, v60 dimensions are small - 87 x 45 x 24 mm. The phone lies perfectly in the hand, the metal case is very pleasant to the touch. The materials used in the design ensure that there is no backlash in the top cover - the device opens and closes easily. The external display has a resolution of 96x16 pixels, which allows you to display one line of 16 characters. The emerald-colored electroluminescent backlight is clearly visible in various conditions. In general, the external screen makes life much easier: now you can see who is calling, and answer the call by opening the phone. Thus, the automatic answer becomes in demand - after all, in general, the class of clamshell phones with one internal display has a big drawback: the user has to sacrifice either an automatic answer when opening the phone, or the Caller ID function, knowingly answering all calls. Made using OptiMax technology (different from that used in v66), the internal screen has a resolution of 96x64 pixels, which allows displaying up to 3 text lines of 16 characters, as well as a line of icons and a line of labels for soft keys. The backlight is exactly the same - electroluminescent, emerald color. When the internal display is on, the external display is also on. It was not possible to check the reverse situation, but, judging by the power consumption, the screens do not work one without the other. The plastic keys, located at a decent distance from each other, are slightly recessed into the case, but it is very easy to work with them, there are no unpleasant sensations at all. The two-position scroll key allows you to move through the lists in the phone menu. The choice of one or another item is carried out using soft keys. On the left side surface is a paired volume key, just below the Smart key. On the right side surface there is an access key to voice tags and a voice recorder. The headset connector is located at the top end, the interface connector is at the bottom, and the charger is also connected here. With the exception of a connector for connecting an external antenna covered with a rubber plug, there is nothing remarkable on the back. The rear panel of the phone can be removed quite unusually: you need to pull the holder and immediately pry the panel up (it is impossible to remove it with one hand, you have to use both). You quickly get used to such an organization, and it ceases to seem uncomfortable. To take out the battery under the back cover, you have to make considerable efforts, which, on the one hand, is good, since the battery does not hang out, but on the other hand, with frequent change of SIM cards, an advantage turns into a big disadvantage. The phone comes with a 500 mAh lithium-ion battery. According to the manufacturer, it can provide up to 80 hours of standby time and up to 100 minutes of talk time. The claimed charging time for a standard battery is 2.5 hours. Under the conditions of the Moscow MTS network, the phone worked stably for about 2 days in standby mode with 5-6 minutes of calls per day. Unfortunately, the v60 has a very high power consumption that a standard battery can't handle. Menu You can get to the main menu by pressing the corresponding key located under the screen. The menu does not have quick navigation using number sequences, but there are shortcuts (up to 9) to almost any menu item. Shortcuts can be not only digital, but also voice, which is quite convenient. In terms of functionality, the phone is identical to the v66 or T280 models. Here I want to talk only about what seemed interesting to me. Using the volume keys and the Smart key in standby mode on the external display, you can change the current user profile, in particular, switch the ringer level, indicate whether the vibrating alert is enabled or disabled. If you have missed calls, you can view the entire list without opening the device; One number or name is displayed at a time. The phone fully supports Cyrillic input, that is, you can use the Russian language both in the phone book and when writing short messages. The only bad thing is that when searching for a subscriber by the first letter of the name in the phone book and the Russian language of the menu, only Russian letters are available to you, there are no English letters. Given that many people write names in the phone book in English, this is more of a disadvantage than an advantage. There are no such problems in the English language of the menu. In the phone book, you can record several phone numbers for one name, determine their types. Despite iTAP predictive text input for English and German, this function is not provided for the Russian dictionary. In order not to type the text of the messages letter by letter, the most frequently used messages can be formatted as templates. Special mention deserves voice dialing for 25 numbers, which works very well even in a noisy street. To activate voice dialing, you need to press the corresponding key on the right side of the device. A long press on it will also activate the voice recorder (maximum recording time is 3 minutes). Each entry is stamped with a date and time, but it cannot be given a title. Entries are deleted both wholesale and retail. The phone has three games: Paddle Ball, Mind Blaster and Black Jack. All of them are known from other devices of this company and are very uninteresting. Some descriptions of the v60 talk about the presence of an infrared port - in fact, there is none. But to synchronize the organizer data with a PC, you can use a cable that connects to the USB port (as an RS232 option). The only problem is that this cable, along with the Starfish® TrueSync® software, will have to be purchased separately. By the way, if you decide to use packet data transfer, or simply GPRS (4 + 1), you will definitely need a cable. Impressions There are no complaints about the quality of speech reproduction and the sensitivity of the device. The volume of the speaker is enough almost always. The ringing of the phone is clearly audible in most places, including outdoors from a bag. The vibrating alert is slightly better than average. The main advantage of this fashion phone is the aluminum body, which determines the price of the device. Technical characteristics of the v60 are very good, but a weak battery and the lack of an infrared port depreciate them in many ways. You won't be able to use the v60 as a business phone; it's also inconvenient as a fashion phone. The point, of course, is in the small screen, which often does not contain all the necessary information (for example, a phone number in the phone book) at a time.
