MOTOROLA T205. Mobile phone review
Review
The appearance of this phone is unusual for Motorola devices. The phone is thin (14 mm), has a small size and weight of 90 grams. There is no capsule for attaching the phone to the case - you will have to use either a case (there are none yet) or a holster to be worn on your belt. In any case, it will be difficult to pick up these accessories, since the shape of the phone, or rather, its thickness is rather unusual. There is a hole for attaching a strap, which allows you to carry the phone on your hand. In our market, devices of three colors will first be available: Metallic Light Titanium, Metallic Radar Blue and Metallic Silver. I had a phone for testing, designated as Metallic Silver, however, the color differences concern only the front part - the back panel and the bezel around the display are invariably black. Despite the fact that the phone uses a 600 mAh lithium-ion battery, which has already become standard for Motorola, its appearance has undergone changes. The battery is also the back cover of the phone. The battery is attached very securely, there is no backlash. The phone comes with a travel charger that allows you to fully charge the battery in two or two and a half hours. The operating time of the phone in urban conditions was about three days with an average intensity of conversations (up to 15 minutes a day). The phone did not turn off at night. The SIM holder has a simple and reliable design. The keyboard is made of plastic. The volume keys on the side surface, on the contrary, are made of rubber and in standby mode provide quick scrolling through the phone's address book. Below the screen is a navigation key that allows you to navigate through the menu. This model differs from the usual Motorola devices by the key with a green dot, which replaced the send call button with a painted green phone. The differences do not end there, consider the menu. Menu When the phone is turned on, a splash screen appears on the screen. The graphic display can display up to 4 lines of text and one line of icons. Among them are icons of signal strength (5 divisions), battery level (4 divisions) and, oddly enough, an indicator of the line in use. It's no secret that most mobile operators allow you to keep two numbers on one SIM card, and their simultaneous use is possible. The vast majority of phones support this feature, but it's not entirely clear why this icon was needed on the screen. The display also shows the date, time and the name of the mobile operator. The menu can be accessed by pressing the navigation key in one of the available directions. You will see 8 icons arranged in two rows, a signature for the selected item appears below. Menu navigation is carried out using the corresponding keys, item selection - using the green key, access to the level up - with the C key. Quick menu navigation is provided, but it functions rather strangely. In particular, once in the main menu, you can immediately select the desired item by pressing the number corresponding to it. But to enter it, you have to press the key with the green dot. In the submenu, short numeric sequences work fine. It is possible to set up a quick access menu consisting of a maximum of 9 items. Up to 100 numbers can be stored in the phone book, called directory, (in addition to the SIM card memory). The rest of the phone book features are standard: searching for entries, creating new ones. When editing and further saving the record, a note about the successful completion of the operation and a small animal icon appear - a nice change. Entering text into the phone book is possible only in English, however, as well as when typing SMS messages. By the way, the phone provides the ability to save up to 5 templates for SMS messages. Of the other interesting features implemented in this device, it is worth noting the ability to manually select the operating range - 900 or 1800 MHz, by default the selection is automatic. In this model, there is only one call timer, and a minute one. There is no brand name - the second timer, adjustable for any time. There are two screensavers that, when activated, show small animations on the screen. In one case, this is a small dragon chasing a fly and trying to eat it, in the other, a fish trying to swallow a heart on a hook. For the first time in an entry-level phone, the function of turning on and off according to a schedule is implemented. You have the option to set your phone to turn on or off automatically at the time you specify. The phone allows you to configure both one on / off cycle, and use it all the time or only on weekdays. In the Tools menu you can access the calculator. Also, for the first time in a phone of this class, a calendar appears that allows you to view the year by month and set notes with sound warnings. Each comment can be up to 21 characters, for a total of 20 comments. For each comment, a warning time and a day are set, however, it is not entirely clear why these data should be set again when selecting a specific day from the calendar: you have to enter the day a second time, which is inconvenient. There is also a regular alarm clock that can be set to sound once. Sound quality, ringing and sensitivity Let's move on to the subjective parameters of testing. It seemed to me that this phone has quite decent sensitivity, I had no problems using it in the city, the sound quality was good, the sound was clear. I also heard pretty well. To be honest, I did not expect such a clear sound from an entry-level device and was pleasantly surprised. Sometimes for some reason it seems that the voice on the other end becomes velvety. The user has the opportunity to choose a ringtone from 5 tones and 13 melodies, but you cannot create your own melody. At maximum volume, the piercing trills of the phone are heard very well - it is difficult to miss a call. The work with vibrating alert is inconvenient: it can be installed either without sound, or with one preset tone (trill), but not with a melody. As for calls, this is perhaps the biggest drawback, however, the choice of melodies let us down, and the lack of the ability to create your own is depressing. For SMS messages, you can select one of the presented melodies or ring tones. The phone remembers the last 10 dialed numbers with the date and time of the call. There are also lists of missed and received calls. Conclusions It should be remembered about functions uncharacteristic for entry-level devices, for example, auto-off and turn on the phone according to a schedule or a small organizer that allows you to set warning signals that help bypass the limitations associated with having only one alarm clock. The communication provided by the phone is of quite decent quality. There are some inconveniences when working with the menu, but you quickly get used to them. The phone practically does not perceive the signal "busy", which leads to the impossibility of using auto redial as a function. On the whole, the phone left an ambiguous impression: on the one hand, it offers good functionality, on the other hand, it has a somewhat ill-conceived menu and design, which sometimes leads to inconvenience to use it. However, you should not expect anything more from a budget model: this is a phone exclusively for talking, and it is a direct competitor to such entry-level models as Siemens A35, Panasonic GD35 (review will appear as soon as the final version of the software is released) and even Siemens C35 , although this device, taking into account the almost identical price, it rather loses. Moreover, it loses not in terms of functionality (the devices are quite comparable in this parameter, and in some points the T205 is clearly in the lead), but in terms of ease of use.
