ERICSSON T66

This device is rightly called one of the smallest in the world: it is a little higher than an ordinary lighter. Many attribute this achievement to Ericsson engineers and are seriously mistaken, since the phone was developed by MicroCell specialists under an ODM contract. To be more precise, they developed the iron component of the device, the software stuffing was the work of Ericsson engineers (to understand this, just look at the phone's menu and functions). By the way, one of the smallest models of the recent past - Nokia 8210 was created by the same employees of MicroCell - well, they broke their own record.

The phone is not just miniature - it sinks in the hand, its dimensions are 92x41x17,5 mm, and its weight is only 59 grams. The phone's design is traditional for Ericsson. Around the screen you will see a border that can be silver or purple - hence the names of the color schemes - Silver Supreme and Purple Passion. The case in the first case is dark brown, in the second - light. Numeric keys are made to match the body; they are small, convex and located close enough to each other. But, surprisingly, they are easy to work with. Unfortunately, the keys located below the screen (arrows, context menu and C) are less convenient. They are too small, it's hard to press them, sometimes you inadvertently hit the send or end call keys. But from such a small device one should not expect a comfortable keyboard in general. The developers of the T66 have done everything possible: the number keys are relatively comfortable and quite comparable to those on much larger phones. The designations applied to the keys are clearly visible in the dark, they merge in the sun: after all, the font is small.

The screen is small, to match the phone. The word "small" when applied to the T66 display sounds ambiguous, since on many models from Ericsson, for example, the T39, the screens are much smaller (by two lines). In the tested model, the display allows you to display up to 4 text lines of 16 characters, as well as labels for soft keys or a title bar. The display backlight is an ordinary LED (green). (In devices with screens made using polymer technology, the backlight is usually emerald.) On the T66, the backlight is not very bright, but it provides comfortable work both in the dark and at twilight.

The service LED, located at the top end of the phone, is almost invisible in the daytime, but clearly distinguishable in total darkness. You cannot turn off this indicator, and few people use it at all.

On the left side surface of the device there is a volume control key, which traditionally shows the estimated phone operating time, the number, the name of the current profile in the standby mode. The first time I used it with an almost completely discharged battery, I was very surprised to see that the estimated operating time of the device is about 3 hours in standby mode. The phone worked exactly that much, and then when an incoming call just turned off. According to the manufacturer, the T66 standby time is up to 150 hours, and in talk mode - up to 2.5 hours. Under the conditions of the MTS network (Moscow), the phone functioned for 2 days with 20-25 minutes of total talk time. According to this indicator, the device is quite comparable with the Nokia 8210. True, it uses a 570 mAh lithium-ion battery, which is hidden in the battery compartment, covered with a lid, which is part of the rear surface of the phone. The total charging time of the device is only one hour.

The SIM-card holder in this device is not quite usual, although at first glance you don't seem to notice anything special. After some time, however, you realize that the card is inserted and removed from the side through a special hole provided in the case. By placing the card differently, you risk breaking it.

Menu

The menu is organized in the traditional way for Ericsson devices. The main menu is represented by a number of tabs with captions; to get into it, just press any of the arrow keys. Quick navigation is provided using digital sequences, all items and sub-items are numbered. One of the interesting features of the menu is the ability to select the most frequently used items and then add them to the Shortcuts. In the future, to access this list from the standby mode, you will need to press the context menu key. Only one function is assigned to the C key in this device - switching to silent mode. Let's return, however, to the menu and consider all the items in turn.

Phone book

The T66 phone book does not differ in richness of possibilities. Up to 250 names and numbers are stored in the phone's memory, and the SIM card memory is also available. Sorting by name or memory cell number and speed dialing for the first 8 numbers (excluding the very first one) are provided. You can create groups of subscribers; for individual names (up to 10) in the phonebook, personalized ringtones are assigned. That, in fact, is all the functions of the phone book, but an undemanding user does not need more. Yes, I completely forgot: you can enter names in the phone book, including in Russian, the phone supports the Russian language wherever it is meant to be used.

Messages

This menu will bring the image of Nokia 8210 back to life: almost the same functions. There are 10 templates for created texts; settings for receiving broadcast messages; the possibility of mass sending SMS; support for EMS, which cannot be fully used because the latest version is not installed. Of the functions that are missing in the prototype, it is worth noting Chat, as well as the ability to send and receive connected (long) messages.

Call Information

Call lists are stored in this menu, and data on missed calls are presented as a separate list (up to 10 entries). For outgoing and incoming calls, a common list (up to 20 positions) has been created, in which time and date are indicated for each entry. In the same menu, you can view information about the duration of received and sent calls, as well as the time of the last call.

Parameters

This item provides access to the main settings of the device. There are 5 tones and 11 melodies for setting the ringtone in the phone. Those who are not satisfied with the existing signals will be able to record their own melody (up to 8) in the built-in editor. Here you can also set up a vibrating alert and a signal for an alarm clock or a short message (any tone or melody presented in the device). If you wish, you can turn on the minute timer, which during a call will notify you of the next elapsed minute with a squeak.

User profiles are configured according to the tastes and needs of the owner of the device. I was curious about the Auto-activate profile function associated with events in the organizer: when, for example, a Meeting occurs, the corresponding profile will automatically turn on.

Extra

In the menu with this name you will find the organizer settings. The month is displayed by week; to go to a specific day, you need to press the context menu key and select a day from the list. When viewing, a time grid is displayed, in which all the events entered are marked, but, since the screen is small and a minimum of information fits on it, you have to use scrolling. Traditionally, you can add events of several types to the calendar (Meeting, Call, Reminder, Task), as well as set a warning signal and the time during which the task will remain relevant.

I think, however, that most users will be more interested in the function of an ordinary alarm clock, which is set both for single and multiple activation on certain days of the week. The alarm clock can also be used when the phone is turned off.

The device has a countdown timer, as well as a stopwatch with the ability to display intermediate results. Codes memo, calculator are provided. The games are represented by Pyramid solitaire, a variation on the theme of the arkanoid (Smash) and the Mill (Mill) - a good logic toy.

Impressions

In terms of communication quality, the T66 is a standard phone, there are no problems that could be caused by its miniature size. The sound in the speaker is quite loud - you do not have to listen during a conversation. An undoubted disadvantage of the phone design is the remoteness of the microphone from the mouth - the interlocutor can sometimes hear ambient noise. The volume of the call is clearly not enough, it is only audible in quiet rooms; the vibrating alert does not save the situation, because it is weak (the phone is still very small!). The device should only be worn in a shirt pocket - you will hear a call, but the vibration will still feel bad.

Summing up all of the above, I would like to note that in the T66 model the idea of a fashion phone has been brought to its logical conclusion. Most of the people I knew and even strangers were amazed by the size of the phone - it really made an indelible impression on others. At the same time, the keyboard turned out to be quite comfortable. Functionally, this is, of course, not the richest model (although it still has the minimum necessary), and it will be of interest to a very small circle of consumers. T66 buyers will be people who, on the one hand, want to stand out, and on the other hand, all they need from a phone is that it rings. But for those who talk a lot, this device is also not suitable, because due to the short battery life, it requires constant recharging. At a price of 300-330 dollars, the purchase of T66 can hardly be called justified. Finally, I would like to note that all Ericsson accessories that require a dynamic menu in the phone are not suitable for this model (we are talking about mp3 players, an FM receiver, etc. nice additions to the phone).

The SAR value for T66 is 0.85 V/kg (10 grams), or 1.32 V/kg (1 gram). These figures are very close to acceptable, which means only one thing - the power of the transceiver in this device was overestimated in order to ensure good communication quality with a miniature size.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

warm windows 06.11.2004

Heat-reflecting coatings for glass have been known for a long time and are often used in the windows of south-facing buildings.

In hot weather, they reject the infrared rays of the Sun, maintaining an acceptable temperature in the rooms. But, unfortunately, in winter, when heating by the sun's rays would not hurt, these glasses continue to reflect heat.

This is not how a new glass coating developed by English chemists from University College London and the University of Liverpool behaves. Several decades ago, scientists discovered that vanadium dioxide, which transmits infrared rays at ordinary temperatures, becomes opaque to these rays if it is heated above 68 degrees Celsius.

English chemists, by adding traces of tungsten to vanadium dioxide, were able to reduce the transition temperature to 29 degrees Celsius. When newly coated glass is heated to this temperature, it begins to reflect heat rays. In the meantime, the temperature of the glass is lower, it passes them and heats the room. It is estimated that on sunny winter days, apartments on the south side of buildings with such window panes can save up to half of heating costs.

The coating is applied by keeping the freshly made, still hot sheet glass in an atmosphere of two gases - vanadium oxytrichloride and tungsten hexachloride at atmospheric pressure.

Two problems must be overcome before mass production of the new glass can begin. First, the self-adjusting coating gives the glass a yellowish-greenish tint. To neutralize it, blue dyes can be introduced into the glass. Secondly, the new coating can be washed off when washing windows. Apparently, it will be necessary to protect the heat-regulating glass on both sides with sheets of ordinary glass.
